- Leicester City beat Manchester United 4-2 at King Power Stadium on Saturday- Youri Tielemans, Çağlar Söyüncü, Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka netted for the Foxes- Brendan Rodgers hopes the result can help to boost confidence within the squad- City produced a much higher level of performance than in recent weeks, he added
Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side led in the first half, but it was Leicester who came out on top following an enthralling final 12 minutes of action on Filbert Way that included four goals.
Rodgers’ side collected maximum points at King Power Stadium for the first time since the opening day of the season, while it was also a first Premier League victory at any venue since the end of August.
As a result, City sit 11th in the top-flight table with 11 points from eight matches and Rodgers was pleased to see their game plan executed against a high-quality opponent containing world-class players.
“You’ve got to keep proving it every week and hopefully that’s it for us,” the manager commented post-match. “It’s been a slow start, a couple of wins, but now that’s a big win for us. That will regain our confidence again as a team.
“And it shows that when we play to that level and that mentality, then we can be a really difficult team to play against. That’s the foundation of us (the press). Once we do that, we’re a really dangerous team.
“It was a really aggressive, emotional game, pressing the opponent, being a really difficult team to play against and then once you can press and be that aggressive, it takes the temperature of your attacking game up. With that, we were excellent.
“I thought we started well. Their central players weren’t pressing, so we could be patient and work the ball through the pitch and into some really good areas. We were putting pressure on their backline.
“We came back into the game and showed a great mentality. We went in at half-time in a good place, but second half it was just about enforcing our aggression in the game, because fundamentally that’s when we’re really at our best.
“In particular in the second half, we were very good. We’ll reflect on it, look at the areas we could have been better, look at the really good parts of the game and then take that forward.”
The 48-year-old praised Youri Tielemans’ performance, not just for his stunning first-half goal, but also an impressive all-round display alongside Boubakary Soumaré in the middle of the park.
“He’s an outstanding young player,” Rodgers enthused. “He’s been away with Belgium playing a couple of games over the international break and then to come in and play with that poise and quality in the game.
“He scored one, he was unfortunate when [David] De Gea made a great save to turn it onto the post and him and Bouba (Boubakary Soumaré) in there, along with James [Maddison], they are always ready to take the ball and allow us to play through and build our game.
“Overall, he was outstanding.”
The Northern Irishman also applauded Maddison’s influence on proceedings after the England midfielder started for the first time in four games, before his replacement, Ayoze Pérez, set up Jamie Vardy’s seventh goal of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
Rodgers added: “He was pressing the game, working hard, and then he picked up some great little pockets of space and was unlucky with a couple of through balls. Towards the end, him and Kels (Kelechi Iheanacho) were just starting to tire a little bit.
“We could then bring on the other two guys to go and influence the game. I thought just giving him that break from the team, then he came into the Legia Warsaw game and was good in that game.
“He was bright against [Crystal] Palace when he came on, he’s worked really well over these past couple of weeks and now is setting a standard again, of which he has a really high level. I thought he was more like himself.”
