- Leicester City sealed a 4-0 pre-season friendly win at Hull City on Wednesday- Manager Brendan Rodgers was enthused by City's play both with and without the ball- The quality of the goals also pleased the former Liverpool and Celtic manager- He went on to provide details on the Club's plans for a pre-season double header on Saturday
Patson Daka, Harvey Barnes, Wesley Fofana and James Maddison struck for the Foxes at MKM Stadium, sealing their first win of pre-season. City were on top for large spells in East Yorkshire and, as the players begin to build a base level of fitness, Rodgers can see improvements every day.
There were 10 changes at the interval in an effort to give as many players as possible 45 minutes against the Tigers.
"I’m very, very pleased," the FA Cup-winning manager told LCFC TV. "Firstly, from a fitness perspective, I think you can see the speed of the team just [growing] each day and in each game. I was really pleased with how, tactically, we played in each half.
"We played two different systems and the players played the systems very well. We need that adaptability and we showed great quality tonight. The main bulk [of the work] is just getting that physical fitness. Now, over the next few weeks, we’ll start to build on our speed and strength elements, physically.
"There’s lots to work on still tactically. It was a really good demonstration tonight from both teams and I was really, really pleased to play that way against their systems – which can be difficult – but the players did very well."
While all of Leicester's four goals impressed Rodgers, the Northern Irishman was particularly enthused by Daka's 29th-minute opener. After combining with Dennis Praet to win possession, the Zambia international recovered from a heavy touch to confidently apply a precise finish.
"Patson’s loose with his touch, but we just keep saying to players, it doesn’t matter about making a bad touch... just get on with it," the Foxes manager added. "You can see he recovered the ball straight after and then he finished it really, really well.
"The goals were very good, with good build-up play, but everything was connected and I was really pleased with some of the tactical things we’ve been working on. Especially, with the second-half team, some of the areas we looked to get into, with full-backs, with the no.8s, it pushes us higher up the pitch when we can be more aggressive. With and without the ball, it was a pleasing night."
Rodgers believes the fitness levels of all players are starting to sync up as the new season approaches. Preparations will continue on Saturday as two different squads face Derby County and Preston North End. Rodgers will be at Deepdale, while assistant manager Chris Davies takes a side to Derby.
The managed explained: "I think I said before Saturday’s game (a 3-3 draw at OH Leuven) that the group was in two different speeds – the guys who have been in longer and the guys who have just come back.
"For both teams to get that 45 minutes was really good for them and we’ll build into Saturday now, where the players will get 90 minutes over the course of two games. I’ll be going to Preston and Chris will take the Derby team.
"We’ll always assess after the game, see medically where players are at, but we’ll come in and do some more work tomorrow and Friday and continue with our preparation."
