_- Leicester City drew 2-2 with West Ham United at King Power Stadium on Sunday- Youri Tielemans and Ricardo Pereira struck for the Foxes in either half_- Jarrod Bowen and Craig Dawson also netted to earn the Hammers a point- Brendan Rodgers was bitterly disappointed to concede from a corner in injury-time
Coming back from a goal down and Jarrod Bowen’s 10th-minute opener at King Power Stadium on Sunday, Leicester looked to have registered a first three Premier League points of 2022, courtesy of Youri Tielemans’ penalty and Ricardo Pereira’s second-half header. But David Moyes’ Hammers would take a share of the spoils following Craig Dawson’s stoppage-time equaliser, a blow to the Foxes, who missed out on returning to the top 10 in the top-flight standings. Rodgers commented post-match: “I feel for the players, it feels a little bit deflating at the end when you concede from a set piece again. For them to get the header inside the six-yard box and score was bitterly disappointing. “I thought West Ham started better, you could see why they are in the top four, the confidence in their game and then we concede the goal, which was a poor goal from our perspective.
“You sense the anxiety in the ground but as the half wore on, we started to find a bit of comfort once we started to move the ball and keep the possession and then we looked a threat. It was just a case of reinforcing that at half-time, because that’s our mantra.
“We’re a team over this last period of time that has had our success through our game. [In the] second half, we started to take the ball, getting in better positions, [and] opened up the pitch and I thought we were excellent. To lose the goal late on, when we’re set up to deal with everything, is a hard one to take.”
Rodgers reserved praise for the performance of England winger Harvey Barnes, who was at times unplayable on the left flank, particularly after the break, setting up the second goal with a cross that notched his fourth Premier League assist of the campaign. “I thought Harvey was outstanding today,” the Northern Irishman continued. “[in the] second half, he was brilliant. The speed of our game really helped Harvey because we could switch it from one side to the other very quickly, rather than the ball moving slow and by the time he gets there, he’s double-marked.
“The progression in our possession was very good in the second half and that allowed him time in the one vs. one and you saw the problems that he gave [Vladimir] Coufal, they had to make the change and then he creates the goal. Now the challenge for him is to consistently produce that.
“That left side with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, he was great as well, his running, his pressing. He was very good too, Patson [Daka], he gave us that threat in behind, linked the game up well, pressed the game well and he, and collectively the team, worked very hard today.” Expanding on his assessment of the performance, the 49-year-old saw plenty of positive aspects to the way his side attacked and got on the front foot to create chances and put themselves into a commanding position in the game.
Rodgers added: “I really enjoyed watching the second half because I felt that was us getting somewhere near to what our level has been in terms of our ball possession, speed of our game and switching the game using the sides and that movement to create opportunities.
“So the things I said to the players were just in terms of that collective mentality to be intense after what was a tough start. We then grew into the first half and then throughout the game. I’ve no doubt that we’ll return to the level that we want to be at. In time, that will happen.
“Our only problem is that we have competition and we’re in competition and we want to make that time as short as we can. The one thing that will help us get there that has dropped this season is that collective intensity of our game.
“We want to have the ball, but in order to do that, you have to press the game and be aggressive and that today was much better. That second half was as fluent and as well as we’ve played for a number of weeks.”
