- Brendan Rodgers spoke highly of Leicester City’s approach to combating Zorya Luhansk’s system on Thursday- The Foxes won 3-0 against the Ukrainian Premier League side at Leicester City Stadium- James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho were all on target
City’s first European outing in 1,283 days resulted in a 3-0 triumph over the Ukrainian Premier League outfit, who in the opening 45 minutes created several goalscoring opportunities.
However, it was the Foxes who were victorious at Leicester City Stadium thanks to strikes from James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Discussing the difficulty of preparing for European fixtures, Rodgers said: “It's always the challenge and excitement of European football they're not seeing, especially teams from the Ukraine. You're not seeing so much of them.
“So, the build-up to the game, you've got to be really tactically aware of the opponent that you're playing against, and obviously, then go and adapt to that in the game.
“But I thought that the players worked really, really well, pressed the game well in the first half, and then, obviously you can see some moments when they break through where they have that four versus three in the middle of the field.
“Second half, we changed that. We played a diamond ourselves, like we've done a number of times before, and just killed off their threat, but it allows us to be nice and stable, so yes, so pleasing in many aspects.”
Rodgers’ commitment to bringing success to Leicester City was emphasised post-match, when he discussed his desire to excel in European competition.
“We want to do well,” he said. “There's no doubt. We worked so hard to get in it and to arrive in Europe, so I don't see the point then of changing it.
“We don't really have the depth to do that, to be honest, with so many players out injured. We want to be strong. The players want to improve and challenge both in the league and in Europe. You have to find a robustness.
“So that's what European football's all about, doing well in the Premier League and then being able come into Europe and sustain the performance.”
