- Leicester City drew 2-2 with Burnley at King Power Stadium on Saturday- Manager Brendan Rodgers was pleased with some of the attacking play on display- However, the Northern Irishman says improvements can be made in the defensive aspect- He also praised Jamie Vardy's performance against the Clarets on Filbert Way
The Foxes played out a 2-2 draw with Burnley at King Power Stadium on Saturday as Jamie Vardy recovered from an early own goal to net two times, either side of a superb volley from Maxwell Cornet for the visitors from Lancashire. Chris Wood also had an added-time header disallowed for the Clarets.
Speaking afterwards, Rodgers admitted he was disappointed with some of the defensive play on show from his side, but credited the chance creation, with City having 22 shots at goal, 50 per cent of which were blocked by Burnley's stubborn defensive unit.
"I'm a little frustrated in terms of the result," he said. "I thought we were much better in terms of going forward. We were much more creative. We had a number of opportunities and scored two excellent goals. Burnley defended their box so well. They made some great blocks and last-ditch tackles.
"I'm more worried about how we defended. We can be much better in terms of our defending. Overall, we created enough opportunities, but probably a point was deserved in the end."
Nonetheless, Rodgers was particularly impressed by Vardy's performance on Filbert Way as the 34-year-old took his 2021/22 tally up to five strikes in six games. City's all-time top Premier League goalscorer has now netted 152 competitive goals for the Club over nine years.
"He's just a top, top striker," Rodgers added. "His movement for the goals, both of them were really good team goals, playing through. Then that final pass comes and he makes it because of his movement. The first one was a great finish into the corner but I thought the second one was absolutely brilliant.
"Obviously, [Nick] Pope's coming out and pushes him wide of the goal, so he's on what would be his weaker side to finish, but it was superb. He was unfortunate in the first half. We had a really good move, but you've got to give credit to [Matt] Lowton getting back in.
"It's brilliant defending. He's on the edge of the box and it looks like Jamie's just going to tap it in, but he gets back in and makes a challenge, or else he (Vardy) would have had a hat-trick. We saw his energy in the game, his freshness, his movement, his work-rate. That was a Jamie Vardy performance."
With new signings still adapting to Leicester's methods and UEFA Europa League football on the agenda, Rodgers believes patience will be key for the Foxes this term as they look to improve their form over the coming weeks and months on several fronts.
"It takes time," he explained. "We're obviously missing some top players, but still, we can be better and we want to improve. There's no magic formula to it. We've had two-and-three-quarter years here where levels have been really consistent and we've worked really well.
"The spirit's always been there. Maybe the confidence isn't quite there within the team, but that will come. We've just got to continue to prepare well, work hard. Confidence then comes from working hard and that always gives you a better chance to succeed and that's our aim over the season."
