- Brendan Rodgers discusses the tight turnaround in Premier League seasons following Sunday’s fixture versus Manchester United- Leicester City fell to a 2-0 loss on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign- The Foxes will return to Premier League action in September
A 2-0 loss at King Power Stadium to Manchester United meant City finished fifth in the Premier League – their second highest placing in the division’s era.
For Rodgers, the challenge now will be to prepare his players for a tight turnaround after a campaign that stretched 351 days.
“Well, firstly, we need a rest!” said Rodgers at full-time on Sunday. “It's been the longest season ever. We need a break.
“We need to go away and refresh physically and mentally, and then I'm really excited by the European competition next year. That will be great for us. Next season comes around quickly.”
When asked about whether the Foxes can again challenge England’s elite sides in 2020/21, Rodgers stressed the importance of sustaining their performances – both domestic and in Europe.
“It's going to be very difficult again,” he added. “There's no doubt about that. You know, the competition, if you look at the four teams above us and the resources and everything that they have, it's a huge challenge, but also if you look at the teams who we finished above, it shows you the level of competition that there is in the Premier League.
“So, our idea is can we sustain European competition? Now that's going to be a challenge for us. That would be a start point for next season. We'll be in Europe, fantastic. Can we then continue to achieve at that level?”
