_- Leicester City lost 4-1 to AFC Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium on Sunday night_- Rodgers says his side must play better for the full 90 minutes in the remaining games - The Foxes host Sheffield United at King Power Stadium on Thursday for their penultimate home game of the season (6pm kick-off)
City suffered a 4-1 defeat against AFC Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium, conceding four goals after Jamie Vardy had given the away side a half-time lead.
Çağlar Söyüncü was sent off in the aftermath of the hosts’ second goal and Rodgers was disappointed with the way that his side performed in the final 45 minutes, which was not at the standard expected.
“I didn’t see that coming to be honest in the second half,” Rodgers admitted in his post-match press conference. “We were good in the first half and could have had another goal, but in the second half we lacked personality, spirit and the right attitude to play, especially when it went to 10 men and that is the biggest disappointment.
“You’ve got to grind it out sometimes in football and that first 10-15 minutes of the second-half, we weren’t playing well, but we had to do that. But then we gave them a lifeline into the game with the penalty and then very quickly you’re 2-1 behind.
“We have to defend better than that. We’ve shown too much of late that we’re a 45-minute team. We have to have a greater mentality to play for longer periods and that’s something we have to go in, analyse and look at.”
Attention now turns to gameweek 36 of the campaign, and the Northern Irishman says they need to sustain a more consistent level of performance for the full 90 minutes in the final three games of the Premier League season.
He added: "We’re back in tomorrow (Monday) and we can’t dwell on it because we’re into another tough game on Thursday (against Sheffield United) so now it’s about finding the way to get over the line and ensure that we achieve our goal.
“We missed a huge opportunity tonight to jump into third but it’s why I’ve always talked about waiting until the end of the season, these are pressure games and we haven’t played well enough.
“We’ll go away, lift the spirits up again and, if we get three points on Thursday, it refocuses then for the remaining games. We have to play better football consistently, that’s what we’re looking to do. We need to get back on that level and fight now for the next game.
"We haven’t attacked well enough and that’s having the courage to get on the ball, to play, to take the risk under pressure and especially with the players like James [Maddison] and Ricardo [Pereira] that we have out, that’s the type of players those are. However, we can have no excuse.
"In this last period when you’re really under pressure, that’s when you’ve really got to show it, so it’s a harsh and big learning curve for us.”
