- Brendan Rodgers speaks following Leicester City's 2-1 defeat by Brighton at AMEX Stadium- The Foxes had two goals disallowed in the Premier League clash in Falmer- A contentious penalty decision also went against Leicester- Rodgers, though, highlighted positives and negatives in the performance level
Neal Maupay's penalty and a Danny Welbeck header put the Seagulls into a two-goal lead, but the Foxes battled back through Jamie Vardy's 150th competitive goal for the Club. Ademola Lookman and Wilfred Ndidi had goals disallowed for Harvey Barnes being in an offside position. The decision which led to Brighton's first-half penalty was also a contentious one as Jannik Vestergaard jostled with Maupay before handling Shane Duffy's header. Rodgers, though, was keen to discuss the football in his post-match assessment. "I thought we actually started the game well, in terms of control," the Northern Irishman told the media at full-time in Falmer. "We had good positions on the field, without ever really threatening the goal, but I think we arrived into good areas and pushed them back.
"That was the first 20-25 minutes, then I felt we started playing into areas where they would want us to go. We started to go central too early and they were able to break away from that. In the second half, we needed a little more penetration.
"We went back to putting an actual winger on in Ade, who I thought was outstanding when he came into the game. Obviously, we gave away a free-kick, which we could defend better.
"That was early on in the second half, but from that moment on, we played with that personality that we need to see in the team and, by the end of the game, we were so unlucky to not pick up at least a point from it. The first goal knocked us.
"We didn’t quite find a rhythm so we addressed it at half-time and I felt, in the second half, we were so much better in the speed of our game, the balance of the team, and we should have got something."
Rodgers says composure is always key in the kind of circumstances which presented themselves on Sunday and he will now go away and reflect on the performance in order to help Leicester improve over the coming weeks.
"I’ve tried to always never get too carried away when we win and never too disappointed when we lose," he explained. "I was much happier today with the team, in terms of control in the game. We’re playing against a team that are a very, very good footballing side.
"They normally build the game very well, but I thought we pressed that and didn’t allow that so many times. Then, for the first 20 minutes and most of the second half, we were able to push them back in their shape and give away very few opportunities in the second half.
"I always analyse the performance level and it’s my responsibility to ensure we can improve with the results."
