- Manager Brendan Rodgers speaks to the media following Leicester City’s 4-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the Premier League campaign- The Foxes have finished fifth in the table, securing UEFA Europa League football for a second successive season- Rodgers praises City’s supporters and the atmosphere created after they watched the team live at King Power Stadium for the first time since March 2020- He also reflects on his pride at delivering the FA Cup trophy for the first time in the Club’s 137-year existence
Although the result did not go as hoped, with Spurs leaving Filbert Way with all three points in a 4-2 victory, Rodgers was inspired by the tremendous backing his side received.
Some 8,000 Leicester City fans were in attendance to witness the occasion, with a lap of appreciation and parade of the FA Cup also taking place post-match, as well as an emotional send-off for outgoing Club legends, Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rodgers applauded the atmosphere created by the supporters throughout the day, making it a special day to welcome them back home.
He explained: “When I drove into the stadium before the game, just seeing them around outside and just having people at the stadium, there’s real excitement to that.
“Obviously, the noise that they generate in the stadium, I couldn’t have asked for anymore, they were absolutely brilliant for us. Away at Wembley last week, they really pushed us over the line.
“And having them back next season will really, really help us. So, we really appreciate it. It’s been a really tough year for all supporters and in particular the Leicester City supporters, but they gave us everything today.
“Hopefully they’ve seen their team give everything over the course of the year. We’ve just missed out right at the very end, but we’ve created history and we’ve shown that we keep making these steps forward.”
Consecutive fifth-place finishes have followed on from finishing ninth in the Premier League two seasons running, while also lifting the Club’s maiden FA Cup and competing in the UEFA Europa League for the first time.
Rodgers outlined those strides that the Football Club has made when speaking to his squad, who were also naturally disappointed with the final outcome, but should be proud of their efforts.
The Foxes manager continued: “I said to the players afterwards that we’ve been virtually playing football now for two years and when we started out, we were probably a mid-table team with a squad of talent.
“Now we’ve a team that can spend consistent periods at the top end of the league, we’re challenging the elite of the division and we’re able to fight for trophies and have won one.
“It’s been a huge effort by everyone. It’s hard now, it’s tough now, because we’ve put so much into the season. But it’s a really exciting period ahead and let’s see if we can keep pushing on.”
The key now, Rodgers believes, is to continue progressing and moving forward during the 2021/22 season and beyond, something that motivates the 48-year-old as an individual and also for the team.
“I absolutely love it here at Leicester City,” the Northern Irishman added. “I’m even emotional now that we’ve just missed out. It motivates me even more to be here and to try and help the Club and push the Club towards that level.
“For me, I will go away and reflect on a great season and then plan and get ready to make it an exciting season with us all back together again, that will be the vision.
“If you look at where the team is at and where it’s come from and what we’re competing against, for us to be up there consistently, makes me very proud of our work and how we want to continue.
“We know it’s a huge challenge for us, but that’s the great test that we have, and we want to keep that and look at it for next season.”
