- Leicester City were narrowly beaten 2-1 by Wolves at Molineux on Sunday- Ademola Lookman struck between efforts from Rúben Neves and Daniel Podence- The Foxes were on top for much of the encounter in stormy conditions- Manager Brendan Rodgers could isolate encouraging areas of his side's performance
Despite Rúben Neves' long-range opener for Bruno Lage's in-form Wolves, it was City who were on top at Molineux. Ademola Lookman got the visitors back in it before half-time, but another admirable strike from Daniel Podence after the hour-mark handed the West Midlanders all three points. It's another frustrating outcome in the Premier League for Leicester but Rodgers could see considerable improvements in his side's performance. "Cleary, the result is frustrating because of our performance," the Northern Irishman said. "I thought we performed very well. We’re disappointed – they had two shots on goal. They had some pressure from set pieces, but apart from that, only two shots on goal and they ended up with two goals.
"I’ve said to the players that I've watched us win some games and play nowhere near that level. We’re really starting to see the fluidity in the team coming back, that movement and pressure and creativity, against a good side. They’ve had a good season and they had all week to prepare for this game.
"I thought we were at least worthy of a point."
The speed of City's attacking play particularly enthused Rodgers, who commended his side for the manner in which they counteracted Wolves' five-man defence.
"We’re starting to return to our level," he continued. "We can see that progressive possession. We moved through the pitch quickly. We had energy in the team. We were a real threat today.
"Maybe in the final third, we lacked that extra bit of quality that is needed to break down a five-man defence, but we arrived there numerous times with some great football. I see the likes of Ricky (Ricardo Pereira) getting back to his level. "I look at the team and it’s disappointing, of course, to not get something, but this game is all about performing. If we keep performing to the level, we know with players coming back over the next months, we can get back and challenge again."
Quick, close football was key for City on Sunday, Rodgers says, with a number of players stepping up to the challenge of playing through their opponents' rearguard action.
"The triangles on the side of the pitch worked really well for us," the 49-year-old explained. "When you’re playing against a back five, the space is on the side. That combination of [Lookman] and Kiernan [Dewsbury-Hall] and Luke [Thomas] performed really well. "All three were able to move and rotate, which creates the space, and then [Lookman] is a talent in the one vs. one. I’m delighted he gets the goal as well, at the second post. I thought Marc [Albrighton] worked tirelessly. He only knew he was playing a few hours before the game. "Ricky, as I said, was back to his level. With Youri [Tielemans] in there too, I thought we worked the sides of the pitch really well."
