After a busy December, City's schedule remained packed as 2018 got underway...
City 3 Huddersfield Town 0King Power StadiumPremier LeagueMonday 1 JanuaryMahrez 53', Slimani 60', Albrighton 90+2'
Leicester City recorded their first victory in six outings as strikes from Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Marc Albrighton saw the Foxes defeat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at King Power Stadium on New Year’s Day.
In came Shinji Okazaki and Slimani, while Matty James made his first start since September after overcoming an Achilles injury. Adrien Silva, meanwhile, was named as a substitute.
With Jamie Vardy missing out due to a groin problem, Slimani lead the line for City and while a header he saw saved in the first period would not have counted, it was a sign of what was to come from the striker.
It proved to be a frustrating opening 45 minutes for City, as skipper Wes Morgan was forced off due to injury.
However, the Foxes were much improved in the second half and it was Mahrez who inspired them to victory.
Albrighton hooked a cross to the back post and the Leicester No.26 met it with a beautifully-taken first-time volley to open the scoring on 53 minutes. Just seven minutes later, Slimani made it 2-0.
This time, Mahrez turned provider as he slipped in his Algeria international team-mate, who lifted a delicate chip over Jonas Lossl to net his first Premier League goal of the season.
Efforts from Wilfred Ndidi and Demarai Gray followed before Claude Puel introduced Silva late on, as the Portugal international made his first appearance for the Club after the completion of his registration as a Leicester City player on New Year’s Day.
There was still time for a third for City, too. Albrighton, who just moments earlier had a goal disallowed for offside, found the back of the net to round off a fine win for the Foxes.
Fleetwood Town 0 City 0Highbury StadiumEmirates FA Cup Third RoundSaturday 6 January
Leicester City will contest an Emirates FA Cup Third Round Replay with Fleetwood Town later this month following a goalless draw at Highbury Stadium.
The Foxes were much changed for the tie against Uwe Rosler’s men, as Adrien Silva, Harvey Barnes and Eldin Jakupović were all handed maiden starts for the Club.
The first period proved to be an even affair. Inside the opening 10 minutes, debutant Jakupović had to turn Aleksandar Dragović’s heavy back pass behind, while Silva was on hand to clear an effort from the resulting corner off the line just moments later.
Wideman Demarai Gray then saw a shot deflect into the side-netting, Barnes hammered a fierce volley over the bar from 20 yards out and Andy King headed off target from inside the box.
After a tight start to the second half, Claude Puel introduced Marc Albrighton and Shinji Okazaki in place of Silva and Barnes just before the hour mark, but it was the hosts who would next go closest.
Markus Schwabl connected well with a volley from distance, but Jakupović was there again to hold onto the German midfielder’s effort.
Following some good work from Gray on the left flank, the winger nearly saw his deep cross to the back post find the back of the net with Islam Slimani lurking, while King curled wide from the edge of the box shortly after.
Rosler’s outfit had an opportunity of their own to win it late on, but thankfully, Jakupović was there to hold onto Ashley Hunter’s deflected effort after it cannoned back off the post and into the arms of the Leicester ‘keeper.
Chelsea 0 City 0Stamford BridgePremier LeagueSaturday 13 January
Despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half, Leicester City put in a superb performance at Stamford Bridge to register a goalless draw with reigning Premier League champions Chelsea.
Jamie Vardy – one of seven changes to the side that drew at Fleetwood Town – returned to the starting XI following a minor groin problem and his threat upfront for the Foxes was evident from the off.
The England international had two opportunities to break the deadlock early on. First, a close-range strike flew off target, before he dragged wide of the mark from a tight angle.
A significant chance for Wilfred Ndidi followed, as the central midfielder forced Thibaut Courtois into a stunning save with a powerful header.
Vardy and Marc Albrighton sent strikes wide shortly after, while Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a huge stop just before the break to deny Cesc Fabregas – goalless at the break in London.
City maintained their tempo after the interval and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead just before the hour-mark, as Riyad Mahrez’s effort rebounded off Andreas Christensen and deflected just inches wide of Courtois’ upright.
The game turned in Chelsea’s favour moments later, though, as Ben Chilwell was dismissed after being booked twice in the space of just five minutes for challenges on Willian and Victor Moses.
But the Foxes worked tirelessly to shut down the Chelsea attack, with Schmeichel forced into making only a few routine saves late on from N’Golo Kanté, Willian and Pedro, before he pulled off an excellent stop to parry Marcos Alonso’s free kick to safety.
City 2 Fleetwood Town 0King Power StadiumEmirates FA Cup Third Round ReplayTuesday 16 JanuaryIheanacho 43', 77'
Leicester City booked their spot in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup after Kelechi Iheanacho struck either side of the break to seal a 2-0 win at King Power Stadium over Fleetwood Town.
Claude Puel handed winger Riyad Mahrez the captain’s armband for the third round replay, while Adrien Silva and Eldin Jakupović made their full home debuts.
It was Silva who had the first attempt on goal, as he curled wide from the edge of the box midway through the opening 45 minutes, while Jakupović was on hand shortly after to deny former Everton man Conor McAleny with a good stop.
The lively Mahrez then struck Chris Neal’s right-hand post on 33 minutes, before Jakupović pulled off another save four minutes later, tipping Kyle Dempsey’s 20-yard strike over the crossbar.
It proved to be an important stop, too, as Iheanacho broke the deadlock two minutes before the break. Islam Slimani lifted an excellent pass into the path of the striker, who side-footed the ball through Neal’s legs.
In the second half, Slimani was unfortunate to not double his side’s advantage after having a volley saved early on, while Vicente Iborra headed over at the front post on 64 minutes as the Foxes went in search of a second goal.
It arrived in historic fashion with 13 minutes to play. Iheanacho, who had earlier had a goal chalked off after the ball had gone out of play before Demarai Gray’s delivery, turned home Mahrez’s pass, but the striker was flagged offside.
However, after referee Jonathan Moss consulted Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, Iheanacho’s goal stood as replays confirmed he was in fact onside – his double sending City into the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
City 2 Watford 0King Power StadiumPremier LeagueSaturday 20 JanuaryVardy 39' pen, Mahrez 90+1'
Leicester City maintained their unbeaten start to 2018 with a hard-fought 2-0 Premier League victory over Watford at King Power Stadium.
Claude Puel made eight changes to the side that beat Fleetwood Town, while new signing Fousseni Diabaté was named as a substitute.
While the Foxes back line had to deal with a number of deliveries into the box in the early stages, Puel’s men had the best opportunity of the opening period as Jamie Vardy forced a good stop out of Orestis Karnezis.
Only a fine challenge from Hornets attacker Richarlison prevented Wilfred Ndidi from scoring his first goal of the season on eight minutes, while Kasper Schmeichel was on hand at the other end to deny Abdoulaye Doucouré.
Troy Deeney had a goal disallowed just after the half-hour mark and only four minutes later, the Foxes were awarded a penalty after former Fox Molla Wagué brought down Vardy in the penalty box.
The England international made no mistakes from the spot, as he sent Karnezis the wrong way to score his 10th Premier League goal of the season.
After the break, Shinji Okazaki had a shot saved and Ndidi headed off target from a Riyad Mahrez corner, while Deeney dragged wide and Schmeichel denied Andre Gray as Watford went in search of an equaliser.
Another Deeney effort followed, but the Hornets could not find a way past Schmeichel and his resilient defence, as Mahrez rounded off the scoring in injury time with a brilliant solo goal.
Substitute Adrien Silva offloaded the ball to the Algerian, who glided past Christian Kabasele before finding the bottom corner from a tight angle.
Peterborough United 1 City 5London RoadEmirates FA Cup Fourth RoundSaturday 27 JanuaryHughes 58' / Diabate 9', 87', Iheanacho 12', 29', Ndidi 90+2'
Leicester City delivered a five-star performance to defeat Peterborough United 5-1 in the Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round at the ABAX Stadium.
Braces for Fousseni Diabaté, on his Club debut, and Kelechi Iheanacho were added upon by Wilfred Ndidi’s late close-range strike for the Foxes, while Andrew Hughes found the net for the Posh.
While Claude Puel made 10 changes to his line-up from the Premier League victory over Watford, the Frenchman still had a clutch of Premier League medal-holders among the starting XI.
There was also a return to action for Danny Simpson, who has been absent with a hamstring injury this month, while Robert Huth (ankle) was an unused substitute.
Vicente Iborra and Adrien Silva, previous winners of the UEFA Europa League and EURO 2016 respectively, were a force to be reckoned in the middle, operating as City’s creative spark.
It took nine minutes of Leicester dominance for them to register on the scoresheet. Diabaté, signed from Gazélec Ajaccio, danced into the 18-yard box and placed it under home goalkeeper Jonathan Bond.
With England youth internationals Harvey Barnes and Demarai Gray causing havoc just behind Iheanacho, they provided a regular supply of dangerous passes into the Nigerian’s path up front.
Iheanacho’s first, three minutes after Diabaté's, came on the back of fine individual play as he cut inside his man and curled a refined finish into the far corner from the right of Bond’s box.
Christian Fuchs, City’s skipper for the day, was the architect of their third goal. The Austrian raced down the flank and whipped in a delicious cross for Iheanacho to volley home on 29 minutes.
Both Diabaté and Iheanacho went close to adding to their tallies before the interval, but City would have been delighted with their three-goal haul as they headed into the tunnel.
The locals presented more of a threat in the second period and, within 13 minutes, they had a goal to show for their efforts as Hughes bundled it past Ben Hamer from Marcus Maddison's corner.
Shortly after, Diabaté linked up excellently with Gray to continue his sparkling performance with a low effort, but Bond was able to get a hand to it.
Substitute Marc Albrighton also went within a whisker with a fearsome drive before, with 12 minutes remaining, he cut inside Liam Shephard and forced the Posh stopper to palm it out once again.
Leicester’s pressure earned further merit late on. In the 87th minute, Diabaté completed his dream debut with another goal before Ndidi, a second half substitute, struck in the dying moments from 10 yards.
Everton 2 City 1Goodison ParkPremier LeagueWednesday 31 JanuaryWalcott 25', 39' / Vardy 71' pen
Leicester City's unbeaten start to 2018 came to an end after they were defeated 2-1 at Goodison Park by Everton.
Heading into the game on the back of a 5-1 triumph over Peterborough United, Claude Puel made nine changes to his starting XI for the fixture on Merseyside.
His men started well as centre back Harry Maguire headed over from inside the box, before Wilfred Ndidi nodded onto the crossbar shortly after.
Marc Albrighton threatened from the wing with some fine deliveries early on, but Everton, against the run of play, went ahead as Theo Walcott slotted in from close range.
A big opportunity followed for Oumar Niasse, and while the striker fired wide on 37 minutes, Walcott would not squander his side’s next chance.
A Michael Keane header fell to the former Arsenal man, who at the back post drilled home from a tight angle for 2-0.
After the break, Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a good stop at the front post to turn Gylfi Sigurdsson’s effort to safety, while he did well just moments later to smother a dangerous cross from the returning Seamus Coleman.
City were then handed a lifeline with just under 20 minutes to play. Wayne Rooney was penalised for a foul on Ndidi in the box to give the Foxes an opportunity to get right back into the game.
Jamie Vardy took it, as he sent England colleague Jordan Pickford the wrong way to halve the deficit - his 11th Premier League strike of the season.
City piled on the pressure late on and it was substitute Kelechi Iheanacho who came closest to netting an equaliser, as the Nigeria international hit the crossbar and then the post in quick succession.
Then, Matty James had an effort denied by Cuco Martina, before Aleksandar Dragović was on hand to clear off the line in the closing stages – the final action of an end-to-end game at Goodison Park.
