- Leicester City’s 4-2 victory over Watford on Sunday was a team effort, according to Brendan Rodgers- Jamie Vardy’s brace, James Maddison's opener and a goal from Ademola Lookman helped seal three points on Filbert Way- The manager added that there were contributions across the pitch, and highlighted City's No.10 as a key figure
The Northern Irishman identified heading into Sunday afternoon’s encounter on Filbert Way that Watford would be a dangerous opponent and was pleased to be able to navigate tricky conditions to seal three Premier League points. Rodgers believes it was another step towards getting back on the right track following the win over Legia Warsaw, but is aware it will take another strong performance at Southampton on Wednesday evening (7:30pm GMT kick-off) to record a third consecutive victory across all competitions. “They had scored four in their last game against Manchester United, so we knew we’d have to play well today to win,” he commented following full-time. “We’re really happy with that, difficult conditions of course, we had to play that a little bit in the second half.
“But overall delighted for the team and the mentality of the team and an important three points. The ball was fine, it was obviously just how long it was going to come down so thankfully it (the snow) lightened off a little bit and we were able to see the game through.
“Obviously, we gave away a penalty being in a good position and then we needed to play forward and didn’t, so we made the mistake, but responded really well.”
James Maddison opened the scoring and then set up both of Jamie Vardy’s first-half goals to move Leicester into a commanding position at the break. After also contributing a goal and an assist during Thursday’s UEFA Europa League triumph, Rodgers felt the creative midfielder was on top form once more against the Hornets and the driving force to help secure the win. “It was great,” City’s manager explained. “You see his (James Maddison) quality, that’s when he’s at his best, when he’s running and working and taking the ball. He was a real inspiration for us today, his first goal gets us up and running and gives the team confidence.
“From our perspective, it (the first goal) was really good. We’ve talked about doing more of that penetration and running without the ball and for him, you see the movement from it. One midfield player comes short, he’s the highest midfield player making the run in behind and that’s what can happen.
“The defender should deal with it, but he’s gambled and had a real positive mindset in getting there and from that, he’s had the touch and it’s a wonderful finish. It was just behind him a fraction, but he’s got his reward for making that run to break the lines and get in behind, rather than always going to feet.
“For him, it was just about looking at his game. This is a level where you are always looking to prove yourself. You can never be calm with that. You always have to be intense; you always have to work.
“When you’re not working so well, you’ve got to keep focused and keep working very hard. I think you’re seeing the work, not just with him, but the confidence turning to the team. The level of the game and the movements are back being synchronised again and we look a real threat.
“It’s not about the one player, it’s about the whole team, but I thought he was excellent.”
The four strikes were shared across the front four, with Vardy’s brace added to by Ademola Lookman’s maiden Premier League goal for the Foxes, set up by Harvey Barnes, who showed the awareness to assist his team-mate and ultimately wrap up the victory. Rodgers added: “Vards (Jamie Vardy) gets his goals as well and across that frontline, Ade (Ademola Lookman) gets a goal, but it all comes from Timothy [Castagne] who responded well to the mistake, then he goes into a 50-50 challenge. “He wins the challenge, we then break away and Barnesy (Harvey Barnes) shows that development and growth as a team where he could finish, but he squares it, and we get the fourth goal and that closes the game out. Collectively, the front players looked dangerous, scoring goals and it was pleasing overall as a team.”
