Leicester City
Leicester City scored an all-important away goal to give themselves a huge chance of qualifying for the last-eight of the UEFA Champions League, despite a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Wednesday evening.
As expected, the current Europa League holders were dominant in possession at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium and only Kasper Schmeichel’s penalty save from Joaquin Correa kept the hosts at bay inside the opening 15 minutes.
The Denmark international, who impressed throughout, then got down low to deny former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic, but he could do nothing about the Spanish side’s next effort.
With 25 minutes gone, Pablo Sarabia converted with his head at the back post to put Jorge Sampaoli’s men in front – Sergio Escudero the man supplying the delivery from the left flank.
Further stops followed from Schmeichel before the break, as he denied Jovetic and Correa in quick succession, before Sevilla doubled their advantage. Jovetic plucked a long ball out of the air and teed up Correa, who finished high into the net on 62 minutes.
But the Foxes looked a threat going forward after Sevilla’s second and their pressure paid off with a brilliantly-worked goal with just over 15 minutes to play.
Substitute Demarai Gray combined with Danny Drinkwater and the latter sent a fine pass into the path of Jamie Vardy, who fired home to give City a huge away goal heading into the second leg in Leicester on Tuesday 14 March.
Major moment
Conceding after just 15 minutes would have been a huge blow for City and therefore Kasper Schmeichel’s penalty save is right up there, but an away goal to take into the second leg will be of great value to Claudio Ranieri’s men.
It was a thing of beauty, too. The one-two between Demarai Gray and Danny Drinkwater opened up a pocket of space for the latter, who couldn’t have played a better ball into his England team-mate, Jamie Vardy.
Who impressed?
Again, Kasper Schmeichel made several key saves to halt a Sevilla forward line and while his fine performance was right up there, defender Danny Simpson deserves plenty of plaudits.
The Foxes had to soak up plenty of pressure and Simpson played a major role in helping them do so, not least against the attacking talents of Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri.
Where do we stand?
Jamie Vardy’s first UEFA Champions League goal gives the Premier League champions a massive opportunity to advance to the quarter-finals.
What an achievement that would be, too. Reaching the last-eight during their first-ever Champions League campaign. The magnitude of next month’s second leg on Filbert Way will not be lost on City's stars.
Coming up...
Improving their form in the Premier League remains City’s number one priority. The Foxes don’t play now until Monday evening, when they welcome Liverpool to King Power Stadium.
