The forward scored the opener at St. Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium, quickly followed by Jemma Purfield’s goal, to move Leicester into a commanding position at the interval. Louise Quinn scored late on, but it was the Foxes who took all three points in a vital fixture at the bottom of the table. The victory opens up a five-point gap between the two sides in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and completed a league double over the Blues, as well as recording the Foxes’ first away triumph in the top-flight.
“We’re absolutely delighted,” the former Manchester United striker told LCFC TV. “This was a must-win game for us, and I feel like we had a really good first half. We just had a game plan and we stuck to it. “But the second half, we could have done a lot better. We lost a little bit of shape, we didn’t finish our chances when we had them, and we put ourselves under a little bit of pressure, especially when they got that goal. Going forward, we know we need to be a lot better in that second half.
“I just feel now we’ve got to be a bit more clinical; we could have really killed that game off. We missed some really good chances, but I think we did really well in the first half, and we’ve just got to continue that now for 90 minutes. It was just all about grinding out a result today and that’s what we did.”
The 26-year-old was involved in the game’s big moment, being felled by Birmingham ‘keeper Emily Ramsey, leading to a red card for the United loanee – reducing the home side to 10 players ahead of Sigsworth converting the resulting spot-kick for her second goal of the season.
After a dominant first 45 minutes, Leicester had opportunities to increase the advantage in the second half, including when Sigsworth rounded substitute shot-stopper Lucy Jones late on, only to find the post rather than the net, though it did not impact the end result.
Talking through the penalty incident, she explained: “All that was going through my mind was making sure I got a touch on the ball. I saw Ramsey coming out, so I knew there was a chance of either a goal or a penalty.
“Unfortunately for Ramsey, she did touch me, so it was a penalty, and it was nice to score that. She went a little bit early, so it was easy to just slot it into the other side.
“[In the build-up for the later chance], I took it from the halfway line, I got away from the defenders, took it around the ‘keeper, she came out, I’ve got to be finishing those, that could have killed the game off at 3-1, but unfortunately it hit the post. We got the win, so that’s all that matters.”
