- LCFC Women are in Vitality Women’s FA Cup Quarter-Final action on Wednesday evening- The Foxes tackle cup holders Manchester City at Academy Stadium (7pm kick-off)- Forward Jess Sigsworth was in conversation with the media ahead of meeting the Citizens- She says everyone is looking forward to the game and a chance to reach the last four
Wednesday’s quarter-final tie at City’s Academy Stadium is part of the rearranged 2020/21 competition, following Leicester’s previous wins over Liverpool and Manchester United.
Sigsworth, who signed for the Foxes from Man City’s close rivals in the summer, has fond memories of previous clashes with the Citizens and is relishing being able to take on the cup holders. Speaking in Monday’s virtual pre-match press conference, she told the media: “The FA Cup is a brilliant cup and there’s nothing better than playing in an FA Cup Quarter-Final with a semi-final at stake.
“We’re really looking forward to going to Man City. This is where we know we can put things right. We can go and showcase what we can actually do.
“And then we can go into Sunday against Spurs confident and hopefully take all three points there. We’re going with no fear, all we’re doing is looking forward to it now.
“This team can do really well against them. I know last season when Leicester played City, they only lost 2-1. We’re so excited to go and play them.
“Unfortunately for Man City, they have got a few injuries. It’s never nice when players get injuries, but it may be a good time for us to play them.”
The 26-year-old also looked back on a disappointing day in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League at the weekend, as the Foxes went down 4-0 at West Ham United. She knows their display at Chigwell Construction Stadium was not a true reflection of the talent and quality within the squad. “It wasn’t a good performance at all,” Sigsworth admitted. “Not to our standards and we should be doing better, we should be picking up points.
“It’s very frustrating that we got beat in the manner we did. But we draw a line under the West Ham game now because if you dwell too long, things will stay the same. As professional players, everyone takes responsibility.
“We all know we weren’t good enough and we'll make sure we perform better in the future. It’s just about reflecting now, learning from mistakes and moving forward. We don’t want to give ourselves a mountain to climb.
“I don’t think we have to be too disheartened yet. It’s a long season and there’s still a lot of points to pick up. I do believe as a collective we are going to get better, and we are going to start picking up points.”
Sigsworth is keen to pass on any information that could help the team reach their potential in the coming weeks and months, as they adjust to the transition of top-flight football. Remaining together as a group during a difficult spell is crucial, she added.
The Doncaster-born attacker continued: “As an experienced member of the group, it’s about sharing my knowledge and helping the girls that have not played so much in the Super League.
“The step up from the Championship to the Super League is always massive and I think it’s just a massive learning experience at the moment, but we’ve got to learn quickly because we’ve dropped valuable points now.
“The speed of the game, everything about the game is different and I think it’s just taking us a bit of time, but I believe, this season, we will achieve our goals.
“We are still moving in the right direction. As a group we’ve got to stick together and start performing better than we have done.”
