Her sixth-minute strike, LCFC Women’s opening goal of the season, sent the Foxes on the way to a comfortable 3-0 success away to the Barclays Women’s Championship side in the Continental Tyres League Cup. Speaking to LCFC TV after full-time at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium on Sunday, the Academy graduate could not hide her delight at notching a maiden Leicester goal - applying a finish to Natasha Flint’s cross - which built the platform for a dominant display. “I’ve been at this Club since I was 13 so it’s just been a big full circle moment and it’s a moment that I’m going to treasure,” the 17-year-old beamed. “It’s my first senior goal.
“We knew coming out today that we had to be on it, and it just happened that I was there on the cut back, so it was a pretty nice moment.”
The youngster, who is on a dual registration loan at FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division outfit Nottingham Forest, played alongside fellow Academy products Monique Robinson and Ava Baker, who also impressed in the cup success. “When I found out I was starting, I was really excited,” the midfielder continued. “I knew I just had to embrace the moment, be confident and just see what happened.
“It’s nice to get minutes, I’ll just take those minutes when they come. I’ve enjoying my time at Forest and if I get minutes with Leicester, it’s just a bonus. Let’s see what the rest of the year brings.”
Second-half strikes from Connie Scofield and Aileen Whelan capped off a good day at the office for City, who will turn attentions back to the Barclays Women’s Super League later this month, starting with a trip to face Manchester City on Sunday 16 October (2pm BST kick-off). Currently positioned 11th, the team are now aiming to kick on in the league and put those first points on the board, Smith revealed.
She added: “I think we were playing in some good patterns and the things we’ve been doing in training came through today, so I think there are a lot of positives to come out of the game.
“Having won this game, now going into the international break on such a high will be good. We’re just excited to see what happens in the league after that.”
