- Leicester City head to West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday (8pm BST kick-off)- The Foxes got up and running with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend- Matt Elliott, the Club's 2000 League Cup-winning captain, discussed the fans' return this week- The ex-Scotland international was speaking on LCFC Radio's Extra-Time podcast
The former Foxes skipper was on duty for LCFC Radio at the weekend and was there to watch as Jamie Vardy's first-half goal secured a maiden three points of the new Premier League season. For the first time since March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foxes were able to play in front of a full house on Filbert Way, making it a memorable occasion for all in attendance as the FA Cup holders started the new league season in the best possible fashion.
West Ham United are next up at London Stadium on Monday night and, looking more generally ahead to the 2021/22 campaign as a whole, Elliott says he is excited to see the term unfold with supporters now back in grounds up and down the country. "It goes without saying that supporters bring so much extra to it," Elliott said on Extra-Time this week. "It brings an extra energy and it comes through in the atmosphere. Jamie Vardy scoring in an empty stadium is different to doing it in a packed house. It makes it that more special. "The away fans like to give him a little bit of stick and it usually backfires on them! It was up there in his repertoire of celebrations. But having the crowd there, we were all just delighted to be there. We saw them in the final of the FA Cup, which was a wonderful occasion.
"People were just so excited to be there at a game first and foremost, the fact it was the final of the FA Cup made it even better. The stadium was only a quarter full, but it had a real personal aspect to it. They weren't just celebrating the Club's victory, but also being back, being able to watch it."
A huge reason for Elliott's optimism comes from the squad Leicester have built over recent months as they look to once again challenge for honours at home and abroad this season.
"It was the same at King Power Stadium on Saturday... absolutely wonderful," he added. "The stage was set and nobody was disappointed, including the players. It was the ideal way to start off the campaign and, going forward, there's a lot to be excited for this season for Leicester City supporters.
"Players have come in already this summer and there's anticipation about what Leicester City are capable of delivering. It's got all the makings of a wonderful season."
