- Leicester City emerged as victors in Sunday’s Premier League battle with Brentford- Youri Tielemans and James Maddison scored in the 2-1 win at Brentford Community Stadium- Brendan Rodgers praised substitute Patson Daka’s influence on proceedings- The manager also provided an update on Jamie Vardy’s fitness
The Foxes netted a goal in each half to seal a second successive Premier League victory - and third across all competitions - in their maiden top-flight meeting with the Bees at Brentford Community Stadium.
Youri Tielemans’ stunning opener broke the deadlock after 14 minutes in west London, though the hosts hit back via Zanka's header on the hour mark.
James Maddison soon restored City’s lead, however, sliding home his first goal of the campaign with a little over 15 minutes to play after unselfish work from half-time substitute Patson Daka.
After scoring four goals in midweek, the Zambian forward may have been expected to go for goal himself when one-on-one with Brentford stopper David Raya. Instead, he slid the ball across to a grateful Maddison to tap in and secure another hard-fought win for the upwardly mobile Foxes.
That’s now 10 goals scored in three games for Rodgers’ men and, in his post-match interview with LCFC TV, the 48-year-old praised Daka’s impact since he joined from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer.
He also explained how the contributions from all the attackers will be crucial during a busy schedule of fixtures.
You can see he (Daka) has given us that extra striker,” the Northern Irishman commented following full-time. “He’s a natural goalscorer. He’s very much like Jamie [Vardy]. He wants to run in behind.
“He presses, he runs, he works. When he’s in front of goal, he’s confident that he can score or assist. It gives us options is what it does. As a man, he’s an incredible guy to work with.
“He’s come in, he’s settled into the team and the squad very well, and now you see the contribution. All three strikers, we’ve been able to manage them, to get them at a good level [because when] one plays, we may have to rest another. We’ve got so many games.”
Rodgers also provided an update on the fitness of Vardy, who was replaced by Daka at the interval.
The 34-year-old did not feature in the UEFA Europa League in midweek after playing a starring role in last weekend’s victory over Manchester United.
The manager added: “He felt something in the warm-up. I could just see in the game that Jamie wasn’t quite himself, wasn’t quite as dynamic, so I don’t want to risk any further injury.
“We made the change and brought in Patson, who’s fresh and confident after his midweek performance.”
