Swansea City netted twice in the first period to record a 2-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.
The opening 30 minutes proved to be extremely tight in south Wales and Claudio Ranieri, who made two changes to City’s starting XI from last weekend’s , may have seen his side go in front.
While Wilfred Ndidi nodded the lively Demarai Gray’s corner wide of the mark at the front post, the Swans back line managed to get in three vital blocks to deny Marc Albrighton, Riyad Mahrez and Danny Drinkwater.
Despite Kasper Schmeichel making an excellent save to turn away from Martin Olsson just after the half-hour mark, the Denmark international could do nothing to prevent Alfie Mawson’s well-struck close-range volley from hitting the back of the net with 36 minutes gone.
Maintaining pressure, Paul Clement’s men built on their 1-0 lead, as Olsson lashed home at the near post to double the Swansea advantage.
Tasked with recovering from two goals down, Ranieri introduced Islam Slimani after the break and the Algeria international was unfortunate not to halve the deficit after forcing Lukasz Fabianski into a fine one-on-one save with his legs on 62 minutes.
Opportunities for Ndidi and Jamie Vardy followed, but the Foxes could not mount a comeback that would have seen them salvage a valuable point at the Liberty Stadium.
Major moment
The game looked even up until Alfie Mawson’s 36th-minute strike and few would have been surprised if neither side broke the deadlock before the interval.
The Foxes paid the price, though, as the Swansea centre back was left unmarked in the box to hammer home, putting his side in front.
Who impressed?
Right back Danny Simpson halted much of Swansea’s advances down the left hand side, despite coming up against the skill of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Martin Olsson's pace.
Simpson made a number of tackles, interceptions and blocks and while Swansea’s second goal came as a result of an attack down City’s right, he deserves plenty of praise for his determined performance.
Where do we stand?
The defeat sees Leicester City drop one place to 17th. The Swans move four points clear of the relegation zone, while Claudio Ranieri’s men remain a point above the bottom three.
Coming up…
An Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round trip to Millwall comes on Saturday 18 February (3pm kick-off) at the Den. City’s next Premier League fixture comes in the form of a Monday 27 February clash with Liverpool at King Power Stadium.
