- LCFC Women were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City_- Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly scored the goals at Joie Stadium_- Manager Willie Kirk addressed the performance from his side- The Foxes are seventh in the Barclays Women’s Super League with 13 points
After two promising results against Everton, the most recent a 1-0 win at Walton Hall Park, they went on the road again, losing out to Man City in the Barclays Women’s Super League. Late goals from Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly decided the scoreline, but Kirk was happy with the flexibility and resilience on show. “It wasn’t pretty from us, and it’s a game where we tried to do something different,” the Manager explained. “It’s not a Leicester side we’re used to seeing. It was still aggressive, but in certain areas of the pitch.
“Until 80 minutes it worked, but they had five forwards on towards the end of the game and found a way through. It was a good finish and the other, from a corner, was unlucky for us.
“I thought the girls gave it their all and I liked how open-minded they were to trying something different. We changed formation at half-time, so they showed flexibility in that. In terms of doing what they were asked to do, they did well.”
Kirk was keen to praise his side’s effort in Manchester and labelled Scottish centre-back Sophie Howard as an example of the hard-working performance on display. He added: “I thought everyone worked really hard. Sophie Howard always has a tough game against Bunny (Khadija Shaw) and she did really well for the vast majority of the game.
“I think we could’ve done better in possession as a team; that starts with the goalkeeper and that’s why I picked her (Lize Kop) today, but it didn’t really come to fruition. “Many look at it as Man City, but we don’t look at the badges, we just look at who we’re playing against. It’s 11 against 11, but I believe Man City did get what they deserved by winning the game.
“I think that’s eight wins in a row for them, the last defeat coming against us in the Continental Tyres League Cup, so there’s a way to go for us, but that’s where we’re trying to get to.” Focus turns to the Adobe Women’s FA Cup now, as Leicester welcome Barclays Women’s Championship side Birmingham City to Pirelli Stadium.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to the cup next week and being in the last 16,” Kirk voiced. “Then we’re back at King Power Stadium for the Bristol City game, so hoping and working towards a couple of positive results.”
