- Luke Thomas praises Leicester City’s approach to defending against Newcastle on Sunday- The Foxes won 4-0 in the Premier League to move up to eighth in the table- It proved to be their first shutout across all competitions since September
A 4-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at King Power Stadium saw City excel defensively, while they were excellent going forward as they recorded their biggest winning margin of the season.
A penalty from Youri Tielemans, won by James Maddison, set City on their way, before Patson Daka make it 2-0 early on in the second half. Tielemans then found the net again, before Maddison scored a goal of his own after another impressive display from the No.10.
Thomas reflected to LCFC TV: “It was a tough afternoon, I was feeling the legs towards the end of the game, but three points, four goals and a clean sheet. What more can you ask for?
“We know how many goals we’ve been conceding recently, especially from set-pieces. I felt like today, with the height that they have in the team, we defended really well and stayed strong as a team. To come away with a clean sheet, we’re all over the moon.
“The manager always wants the aggression and the positivity towards defending. He’s said this week that we’ve not had that so far this season, but today, I felt like we went out there as a team and defended really strong.
“That’s probably why we’ve come away with a clean sheet. We know we can score goals, we’ve shown that we can score goals, the attacking side of our game hasn’t really been a problem so far this season.
“Obviously, we’ve shown that today with 4-0, so it’s a great three points. Hopefully, we can take this into Thursday against Spurs, and hopefully get the three points again.”
League Cup winner Matt Elliott spoke highly of Thomas’ performance against Newcastle on LCFC Radio's Matchday Live, and the left-back was thrilled to receive such high praise from the Foxes legend.
“If he says it, what can I really say?” joked Thomas. “He’s a great defender at Leicester, so I’ll obviously take tips and the positives from him and thank him.”
With two midfielders and a striker on the scoresheet on Sunday, Thomas was not only pleased with City’s first shutout since September, but also the goalscoring contributions across the pitch.
“You know the qualities that Youri has,” the defender said of Tielemans. “He can open up the defence with one pass. For him to come away with two goals is great, so it’s all positive and it’s great to have him back.”
With Zambia sensation Daka leading the line in place of Jamie Vardy, who played 90 minutes against Napoli in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Thomas commented on both of the strikers’ qualities.
“They’re both very similar players, they both show great aggression in the press and they’re both fast players, so they’ve got similarities between them and they can both do the job there,” he added.
“They’re both quality players, so either one that plays, it’s always good and we know that they can score goals.”
