- Goalkeeper Danny Ward reflects on Leicester City's 1-0 loss at Southampton- Carlos Alcaraz struck for the Saints, while Ward saved James Ward-Prowse's penalty- City have lost four games in a row and are sat 15th in the Premier League- The shot-stopper has highlighted the importance of future games for the Foxes
Carlos Alcaraz's first-half strike condemned City to a 15th Premier League reverse of the season, leaving them 15th in the table. Ward saved a penalty from James Ward-Prowse on the night, but it wasn't enough. Leicester created several opportunities throughout the evening, although none of them tested Saints 'keeper Gavin Bazunu.
"It’s a hugely, hugely frustrating," Ward said. "In the main, it was a good performance, but we switched off for 15 minutes in that first half. That’s what’s cost us the game. Also, we had plenty of chances. We’re disappointed we’ve not made their goalkeeper work and ultimately taken one of them. It’s a hugely, hugely frustrating night.
"They’ve not really carved us open and we created a lot of chances, really, without making their ‘keeper work. It’s a tough one to take. We know how big a game it was but we’ve just got to knuckle down and go again.
"With more performances, in the main, like that – and taking our chances – we should be doing okay."
Ward says that saving Ward-Prowse's penalty seemed to motivate the home side further. Within moments, Rubén Sellés' south coast side were ahead.
"It was a strange moment in the game," the Wales international admitted. "Ultimately, it means nothing saving a penalty if we come away losing the game 1-0. Maybe everything got a little hectic after that. We could maybe have shown more experience and calmed the game down a little bit more.
"It’s easy to say in hindsight. I think, regardless of that penalty or the 15 minutes before half-time, I thought we controlled the game. We played some good stuff and there’s plenty of positives to take. It’s just frustrating that we’ve come away with not even a draw. It should have been a win really."
With Chelsea due at King Power Stadium next weekend, before a visit to Brentford seven days later, these are important times for the Foxes. Ward says all focus has to be on securing positive results and climbing the Premier League table.
"Every game’s massive," he added. "I know people may see that as a cliché and just something we say all the time, but it really is. This league’s so difficult. We come here tonight, it’s a difficult game, and it doesn’t go our way.
"We know the quality of the teams all the way throughout the division, not just the top end. It’s two big games. We’ll focus on next Saturday first and we’ll be working hard this week to try and put this one right."
