- Leicester City lost 2-1 to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday- James Maddison’s goal wasn’t enough to take anything at King Power Stadium- City striker Jamie Vardy spoke to LCFC TV following the defeat- A Ché Adams double proved to be the difference in the game with the Saints
Following a goalless first half, the Foxes held the advantage from James Maddison’s stunning free-kick, but the visitors soon restored parity via Ché Adams, before the ex-Birmingham City frontman added a late second to snatch all three points for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side. After gaining the upper hand at King Power Stadium, the tide turned as the second half wore on and, for the second successive home game, Leicester were unable to make early dominance count.
The forward told LCFC TV after full-time: “Going into the dressing room, everyone’s disappointed, it’s gutting. We just said in there, we get ourselves into a great position, are playing some good football, especially in the first half. “We weren’t creating that much, but we were playing well and managed to get a goal in front and then just stopped playing for some reason, so it’s something we need to look at when we go back into training tomorrow and look to rectify it.
“It was looking really positive. I think that’s us and how we play. It was really good, especially being involved in it, but for some reason, in the second half, it didn’t get back up to that level.”
Vardy, whose new contract to keep him at the Club until at least June 2024 was announced ahead of the game, says the squad will have to go back to work on the training ground in order to halt a difficult run of form. Brendan Rodgers’ side have picked up one point from the opening three Premier League fixtures this season. “It was great this morning but obviously it’s bittersweet when we’ve had the result that we’ve had,” the 35-year-old admitted. “So I’m not going to think about it too much now, we need to make sure that we knuckle down and make sure that we bring our A-game every week now.
“No one ever wants to lose a game. We want to be winning as many as possible, that’s what football is all about, picking the points up and getting in the dressing room happy afterwards, so it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but that’s the work that we’ve got to put in.”
Stockport County await on Tuesday evening (7:45pm BST kick-off), as City begin their Carabao Cup campaign against the Sky Bet League 2 side at the second-round stage. The trip to Edgeley Park will be the sole focus between now and then, the striker revealed.
“You can only look at your next game,” he added. “So we’ll go into that, hopefully put in a good performance and get the win.”
