- Chelsea inflicted a 3-0 Premier League defeat on Leicester City on Saturday- Antonio Rüdiger, N'Golo Kanté and Christian Pulisic found the net at King Power Stadium- Brendan Rodgers says City came up against a team playing at a very high level - There is confidence that the Foxes can emerge from a difficult period, he adds
Antonio Rüdiger and former Fox N'Golo Kanté sent Thomas Tuchel’s side in at the break with a two-goal lead before Christian Pulisic added a third to seal three points for the visiting Premier League leaders. Rodgers acknowledged that while they came up against an in-form team who have lost only once in the top-flight this season and conceded just four league goals, City were not on their game, particularly in the first 45 minutes. Speaking to the media after full-time at King Power Stadium, the Northern Irishman said: “We’re honest enough, we have to take our medicine, move on from that, learn from it, analyse the game and look to our next game now. It’s a little bump in the road and we’re working so hard to be better.
“They are obviously a top side who are playing at a really high level – they are fit, strong and technically very good. If you want to be a top end player, that’s what they look like. We’ll always need the players to be able to compete consistently, however, you can’t take anything away from Chelsea, they played very, very well.
“We’ve had a great run and in this little period it’s my responsibility and my job to lead us through that and I’m very confident that we’ll do that.”
City produced a much improved second half display in front of the Blue Army, though it was still a disappointing afternoon for the Foxes, who were unable to find the net or take anything from the contest.
“We lacked that belief to take the ball and pass the ball,” City’s manager continued. “We obviously went a goal behind early on which was disappointing and that gives them that confidence away from home to play to the level that they can do.
“In general, especially in the first half, we weren’t at the level and part of that was down to their pressing being really good. But we were also misplacing passes and a little bit careless.
"If you do that and you can’t build those sequence of passes then of course that makes it difficult. The second half was much better with different personnel, a different mentality and we forced [Édouard] Mendy into some saves.”
The Foxes were missing midfielder Youri Tielemans due to a calf injury for the clash with the Blues, while Rodgers also remains unable to select the likes of Wesley Fofana and James Justin as they continue to recover from long-term injuries. The 48-year-old admitted that the trio are a big loss to the group, especially given the demands placed on the squad this season as they compete across several competitions domestically and in Europe.
“A squad like ours always will do, that’s the reality of it,” he explained. We’re a team that will always have that spirit to keep going and I think you saw that with the players today. Second half, they kept fighting, kept working and kept running right to the very end.
“They are such an honest group of players and there’s many challenges for us with so many players out, and lots of games and without that real depth of squad to cope with that, it’s difficult, especially against a team at Chelsea’s level.
“Missing players like Youri and Wesley Fofana and James Justin, then of course they are really important players for us. Without that player who can take the ball and pass forward… he (Youri Tielemans) has been so consistent for us in that way.
“We have a sense of perspective over where this team has been over the last few years. We’ve totally overachieved to arrive not just into the top six, but in and around that top four and challenging some of these teams that are way, way above us in terms of budget and depth of squad.
“With the success we’ve had, it’s brought us European football and more games to contend with. With all those factors, coming into this third season has proven to be a challenge for us.”
