- LCFC Women meet Brighton & Hove Albion at AMEX Stadium on Sunday (2pm kick-off)- Jess Sigsworth previewed the fixture, speaking about how City plan to turn their form around- The forward scored her first Foxes goal in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League last weekend- She says the encounter with the Seagulls is a game that Leicester believe they can win
AMEX Stadium is the venue for the Foxes’ latest WSL encounter following last weekend’s home defeat to Manchester City, a game which saw Sigsworth get off the mark for her new team.
She revealed in Thursday’s pre-match press conference that spirits remain high within the group as they continue to search for that winning formula at both ends of the pitch, in order to climb up the table.
The 27-year-old commented: “I think, as a striker, you always want to be scoring goals and to get my first one, it took a while, the sixth game, so when it hit the back of the net so early (in the game), I was so relived.
“We’re always positive. We’re obviously disappointed with the results at the moment, but we know that dwelling on things and being negative won’t help anything.
“We go into training each week, it’s a new week and the past is the past - the only thing we can do is put things right. It’s positive, we all keep behind each other, we believe right now that we’re going to go to Brighton at the weekend and win.
“We’ve had a great week of training, and everyone just tries to stay positive, keep positive, stick with each other and we know soon that the results will start coming.”
Brighton present the next test that City face in the top-flight – a side with an impressive record that includes just one home defeat so far this term and 12 points from their six league fixtures to date.
According to Sigsworth, there is a belief within the Foxes camp that this will be the game to kick-start their season, aided by the backing from the supporters, who have been attending in their numbers at the start of City's first-ever WSL campaign.
“We’re really excited and believe this is a game that we can win,” the striker continued. “We know that Brighton are doing well, they’re in good form at the moment. But we’ve got a game plan and, if we stick to it, we can win. We know they will be a threat but we’ve just got to try and eliminate those threats.
“The fans are absolutely amazing. We say every week that they are our 12th player. They are always so loud and push us on that extra bit. They give us a massive boost.
“For them to want to keep coming back and supporting us is amazing and we want to put on good displays and start winning for them. You do really feel it in games when the fans get behind you.
“We’re so grateful and we’re so thankful that they come back to support us every week and it really does help us. We’d love to get even bigger crowds and for everyone that comes at the moment to keep coming back.
“Every week you want to put on a good performance, you want to get points, obviously for ourselves, but also for the fans as well. They take time out to come and support us and the least we can do is put on a performance for them.
“We’re new to this league and we need all the support we can have at the moment.”
Sigsworth was previously promoted into the WSL twice with Doncaster Rovers Belles and Manchester United, going on to score 46 goals across the top two divisions ahead of her move to LCFC Women in the summer. She sees signs that things are coming together for the newly-promoted Foxes.
The forward added: “I’m quite experienced in this league now and I’ve been in situations before where things at the start haven’t gone our way, but there’s time to turn things around. We’re very new to this league, we’ve only been in it three or four months.
“Give us time and it will be special; it will be what we want and what was expected. We’ve got a great platform and a great base, amazing facilities. Everything is there in place, we’ve just got to start getting the points now.
“I think we’re just getting more on the same page. It’s hard when a group of players comes together to gel quickly, but we’re getting into more of a rhythm now. We’re seeing good spells in games, we just need to have those for longer periods. I do believe it’s coming together now.”
