- LCFC Women take on Manchester United on Sunday (12:30pm kick-off)- The Barclays Women’s Super League fixture will take place at Leigh Sports Village- Remy Siemsen is available to make her Foxes debut- Willie Kirk wants City to apply pressure to Marc Skinner’s side
On Friday afternoon, Willie Kirk spoke to the media ahead of City’s trip to Manchester to take on the Barclays Women’s Super League leaders on Sunday afternoon (12:30pm kick-off). Here are the main talking points…
Utilising the international break
Last time out, the Foxes beat Liverpool 1-0 at Prenton Park as Hannah Cain scored an early and decisive goal.
Since then, Belvoir Drive has been relatively quiet with players on international duty, and Kirk confirms the remaining squad utilised the time well.
“We've not had many players in to be honest,” Kirk stated. “Which is a really good reflection in terms of the players we've got representing their countries, in either the younger age groups or senior squads.
“At times we only had three or four in plus a couple of goalkeepers, so it's been a good time to focus on them as individuals.
“It was also a good time to progress Remy Siemsen's rehab and Jess Sigsworth's rehab, and Jess is hopefully only a couple of weeks away now. It's been really good for focusing on individuals and giving them a bit of love rather than always working on match related stuff.
“I think it did come at a good time, actually, because we weren't overly impressed with our performance against Liverpool. We felt we got dragged into a game that Liverpool were dictating the style of.
“I think the break came at a good time and it gave us a chance to refocus on our targets and go again. But, we've hit our target for the first block of games and the Manchester United game is almost seen as a bonus game for us now.”
Not focusing on the league
Since Christmas, Leicester have reduced a seven-point gap down to a single point, as they sit closely behind Reading.
This impressive turnaround, while not completed, has sparked confidence around the City camp, but the manager believes it is best not to look at the current standings.
“We keep focusing on us,” the former Everton manager explained. “I think I've said a couple of times we've got our own internal targets. I've told the staff and the players to forget the results from other games every week and keep focusing on us.
“We know that if we do what we are setting out to do, we will be fine, and that message has not changed, even though the league table probably looks a little bit better now because the gap is no longer there.
“If you start winning games, you can start moving places. But we've got our own league table based on 1 January and that is in a good place, and we’re ahead of ourselves in terms of our target. We're going into the Manchester United game with no real pressure on ourselves.”
Manchester United - A tough opponent
Sunday’s opposition are league leaders Manchester United, and having worked within the set-up at the Red Devils, Kirk is keen to put on a good performance against his former side.
He added: “They're a top team. It's top versus bottom in terms of the league table, and we have absolutely no right to take anything from the game. I feel we're going into this like it's a free hit, and certainly there's no pressure on us.
“The pressure's probably on Man Utd, all the teams at the top know that any dropped points could cost them at the end of season, so we will hopefully use that to our advantage.
“I've known Marc [Skinner] for a number of years now from my time at Bristol City and his time at Birmingham. I get on with him well, he's a manager that I've got a lot of respect for.
“I think he's doing a good job at Man Utd. He's developed himself really well, from working with the youth system at Birmingham to the senior team and I thought his Birmingham team were very impressive.
“He obviously then had the spell in America (with Orlando Pride) where I think he found out a lot about different styles of game and a lot about himself and he's obviously brought those qualities to Manchester United and he's doing great but hopefully he won't do so well on Sunday.”
