- LCFC Women face Sunderland in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Wednesday’s Group B fixture will be played at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground - The Foxes have one win from two games so far in the competition- The aim is to be in the quarter-finals, claims manager Willie Kirk
Having been away from the action for a little over a month, the Foxes will be excited to get going again when they face Sunderland Women in the League Cup.
However, Kirk believes his squad are in a good place, both mentally and physically, as they prepare for the continuation of their 2022/23 campaign.
“It almost feels like the start of the season,” the manager told LCFC TV. “That’s the feel within the training ground. The players see it as a fresh start which is refreshing, and I’m glad they’ve taken that approach to it.
“We had a couple of friendlies last week which I thought were good preparation for a busy schedule, and certainly tested the players, and that will hopefully allow us to be in a good place ahead of the restart. We’re looking forward to the trip and second time lucky it goes ahead.”
Currently sitting at the foot of the Barclays Women’s Super League, many may deem the cup competition as a distraction. But with Leicester’s only win coming in the competition, Kirk is looking to use the opportunity as a chance to build some momentum.
“One thing that I have been quite big about is I don’t want this club to play in any dead games,” Kirk continued. “We need to beat Sunderland to make the Manchester City game next week worth something.
“There’s still an opportunity to qualify for the quarter-finals of this cup and we want to be there, and the only way we’ll do that is by beating Sunderland.”
“We want to go as far as we can in every competition. We talk about the league being the main focus; it is our focus, but what people don’t always understand is how victories in the cup can help you get the momentum for the league games.”
City’s last match was a heavy defeat to Chelsea at King Power Stadium, but Kirk, about to take charge of only his fourth match since joining in early November, is keen to showcase the hard-work and spirit being produced by his squad.
“Ask any player, the intensity that we train at and how often we train, they’d probably prefer to feature in a match every day,” the Scotsman believed.
“There’s no such thing as massive fatigue, because we are training at a high intensity and the demands on the players everyday are very high. It doesn’t matter if it’s training or a game, the expectations are always there.
“We had 10 days off during the break, and one of those was an extra day because the Man City game was postponed. The players are looking good physically and I’m confident we’re in a good place.”
