- LCFC Women face Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday afternoon- The Barclays Women’s Super League fixture has a 12pm BST kick-off- City beat Liverpool 2-1 on Wednesday night in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Ticketing information for this weekend’s match can be found HERE
With three wins from three, it’s been a fantastic start to the 2023/24 campaign for Leicester, and ‘keeper Leitzig has played a key part in that success, after joining the Club on a permanent basis this summer.
City have kept one clean sheet this season, against Everton in a 1-0 win; a game which saw the German shot-stopper save a vital penalty on the brink of half-time, to claim their second Barclays Women’s Super League win after an opening day victory over Bristol City.
Ahead of their trip to Leigh Sports Village this weekend, Leitzig spoke to the media during Friday’s press conference at Belvoir Drive and confirmed that spirits are high, as they look ahead to a meeting with the Red Devils.
“It's been a really good start because, we've won three out of three,” the goalkeeper stated. “I think the performances have been good as well. It was a long pre-season, and we worked really hard, so it’s good to get some results from that hard work and it proves that we're going the right way. We are confident, and I think if we perform well, we can win against any team, and we have a lot of new players to help us get these results.
“The goalkeepers in the women’s game have developed a lot in the last years, and I think it's important to be good with your feet as well. I'm happy that I'm part of the build-up play.
“We worked hard on it in pre-season and during the season as well, and I think you can see that it gets better and better each game. Against Everton, we had a really good passing combination which wasn't a goal, but we very happy that it resulted in a goal against Liverpool.”
Leitzig soon became a fan favourite among the Foxes’ faithful during last season’s loan spell, and didn’t hesitate to return to the East Midlands on a permanent basis ahead of City’s third consecutive season in the top flight.
The No.1 agreed with her manager, that this Sunday’s match against Manchester United will be the toughest test so far, but she explained how they are not worried about the opposition they are facing, and are instead focusing on themselves.
“We are in a good flow and in a good mood, and everyone has fun on and off the pitch as a group together,” Leitzig voiced. “It’s good to have a lot of games, and good games as well. Everton and Liverpool are strong opponents, and now Manchester United will be. So, we're looking forward to it.
“I think it's important that we are still confident because we were confident in the first three games, and we got the results. We want to play how we play, and don't want to change that or start focusing on who we’re playing against.
“That’s the most important thing, because yes, Manchester United is a big club, but it's just 11 players and we are 11 players as well. And we have quality in our squad, and we want to bring it on the pitch.
“We have already set a statement with the first three games in the season. But even though they are a great team, we want to keep playing well and it would be good if we got some points again this weekend.”
