- LCFC Women were defeated 2-1 by Reading in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday- Natasha Flint scored Leicester’s first open-play goal of the season at Select Car Leasing Stadium- Two injury-time goals from Rachel Rowe secured all three points for Reading- The players will be hurting but it’s now about moving forward, Lydia Bedford said
It was a heart-breaking ending for City in the WSL, as they were defeated by the Royals in the final seconds of the game at Select Car Leasing Stadium. Two late goals from Rachel Rowe settled the clash.
“I’m really disappointed to come away with nothing,” she told LCFC TV. “Particularly when I look back at their first goal, and how much their player infringed our goalkeeper, pushing her into the side netting.
“It’s moments like that where the referee isn’t in a position to spot that which can affect the result, and I think our players have done absolutely everything to come away with points today.
“It’s now just a case of picking ourselves up and going again Tuesday (for training). Our players will be extremely disappointed right now, and they’ll be hurting, but they’re a very together group and they’ve got to go again next weekend against Arsenal.
“I trust in their abilities and what they’re like as a group and it's now about moving forward.
“I can’t take anything away from the performance they put in over the 90 minutes. From the back, players were diligent with their role. We had a few players playing out of position like Molly Pike, who had a fantastic game in the holding midfield role, and credit to her for the work she put into the game.”
One positive which Bedford can take from the game was Natasha Flint’s first-half strike: “Natasha's goal was very well taken and it’s everything we know she can deliver when she’s in those key areas so I'm really pleased for her.
“To go and score our first goal in open play, in such a fashion with Flint in the first half, for me we did everything right.
Remaining 12th in the WSL, Bedford is now looking towards the next game, which sees the Foxes welcome high-flying Arsenal to King Power Stadium, on Sunday (2pm GMT kick-off).
She explained: “They’re professional footballers, it comes with the job title. Every week, there’s a winner and a loser so they’re used to that. But I think it’s harder in the moments when you know you’ve put everything out on the pitch and been robbed of a result.
“But ultimately, we can’t change and control that now. Whatever I say now it’s not going to go back and give us three points from today’s game. Across the board, I’m happy with what the players produced, so now it’s about focusing on what comes next.”
