- LCFC Women beat Everton 1-0 on Sunday afternoon- City’s victory was their first in the Barclays Women’s Super League since October- Janice Cayman scored the decisive goal in the second half at Walton Hall Park- The Foxes sit seventh in the standings with 13 points
After gliding past Everton on Wednesday evening in the Continental Tyres League Cup, City adapted to the pressure that the Manager said was on them to claim the points in the WSL, taking them up to seventh. It comes as Leicester’s first win in the league since the reverse fixture against the Toffees in October, and gives them a good base to build on, but Kirk admits they had to work hard to get the three points across the line. “It was a good game; the pressure was on us a little bit,” he stated in a post-match interview at Walton Hall Park. “I’m well aware it’s our first win since October, and it always going to be a tight game. 1-0 has been the scoreline against Everton the last three league games.
“We had a big win against them on Wednesday, which potentially could’ve been a mental barrier, in a sense, that they had a point to prove, and we needed to make sure we weren’t complacent. We knew it was a completely different Everton team but I’m pleased with how we dealt with it.
“We just asked the players to be a little bit more decisive because we almost conceded a goal when we were in a five vs. two position in the box, and the numbers don’t matter if you’re not decisive in your actions, so it’s about having leadership in those minutes.
“We needed to be a little bit more purposeful with some of our work in the second half. Everton had a few big chances at the start of the half, but apart from that, we managed to deal quite well with it.”
The key moment of the game came during the second half when Janice Cayman created an opening on the edge of the box and curled a left-footed effort past the Everton ‘keeper into the far post. The Belgian international takes her tally up to five for the season and Kirk was pleased she didn’t listen to his advice from the touchline, and labelled her a great asset to the team, with the experience she brings to the field.
“I think everybody on the bench heard me say not to shoot (for Cayman’s goal),” the 45-year-old admitted. “But that’s because we have a method of working the ball and not just taking chances from range, but to be fair, the angle had opened up and there was nothing between her and the goal.
“She fancied herself there and backed herself, and that’s Janice Cayman. She’s a really experienced player and we trust her to make the right decision and thankfully she did today.”
