- LCFC Women beaten 4-0 by Chelsea at King Power Stadium- Leicester remain seventh in the Barclays Women’s Super League- Willie Kirk gave his reaction following Sunday's defeat on Filbert Way- The Foxes face Liverpool next in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup
City put in a valiant first half performance against the current Barclays Women’s Super League champions, but a duo of goals right before the break set a precedent for the remainder of the game.
Following defeat, the Manager spoke about the influence those goals had on the game but believes there were positives to take from the weekend.
Kirk stated: “I think the game changed on the second goal, because going in at half-time it was hard for the players to understand the positives, and they think the game is running away from them.
“That allowed Chelsea to dominate the second half, but I think the first half was a completely different story. Once we weathered the storm in the first 10 minutes, I thought we were excellent.
“I thought we were the better team, but we didn’t capitalise on our chances and final third entries. There was nothing that surprised us at half-time. We turned the ball over like we knew we would.
“We played through and around them. We also knew Mayra Ramírez would give the defenders the hardest game of their life, and she did. I don’t think the performance matched the 2-0 scoreline, but in the second half, Chelsea completely dominated.”
Leicester looked to tire in the second period of play, as the Blues scored twice more to see out the win, and Kirk identified a lack of composure in both boxes.
The 45-year-old also talked about the Foxes’ development and how they are a work in progress, as they now build towards an Adobe Women’s FA Cup Quarter-Final against Liverpool.
“The fact that it was 2-0 allowed the second half to be what it was,” the Manager continued. “We were chasing and getting a little desperate; going forward rather than retaining possession, which you can understand from the players.
“The second half is a consequence of the first half, so most of the work will be on the first half and preventing that happening.
“We had four chances to deal with the ball for the first goal, and you can’t give Chelsea that number of chances. It’s a little lesson for us, that if you’re not clinical when you’re defending, then that’s going to happen.
“At that point we could’ve been 1-0 up and that shows you how important it is to be ruthless, and we weren’t. The second goal, we give the ball away quite cheaply, and that turned the game.
“I’m really happy with how the things are moving forward. We didn’t change anything to face Chelsea, and we played our way to see where we are. We’re moving along nicely and I’m happy with the progress.”
