- Leicester City lost 5-4 on penalties at Liverpool on Wednesday after drawing 3-3 in normal time- The Foxes exited the Carabao Cup at the quarter-finals stage as a result at Anfield- Manager Brendan Rodgers spoke to LCFC TV after full-time- The Northern Irishman was proud of many aspects considering the challenges
The Foxes went 2-0 up at Anfield in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday through a brace from Jamie Vardy, taking the 34-year-old up to 158 all-time goals for the Club, bettered only by two players. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, though, got one back for the Reds.
James Maddison restored Leicester's two-goal advantage with a stunning half-volley from range, before strikes from Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino took the tie to penalties. Caoimhin Kelleher saved two City spot-kicks, before Jota netted the decisive one from 12 yards to send Liverpool through.
With Rodgers limited for options due to COVID-19 cases, mild illness and injury, the Northern Irishman was naturally disappointed with the outcome, but was proud of the performance against his former club.
"With players out, players missing, players coming back, availability of players, it’s always a challenge," he told LCFC TV. "That’s why I was so proud of the team tonight. To come here, it was a great atmosphere in the game, and to put in that level of performance and fight made me proud of the team."
Liverpool hit back in the second half to turn the tide, although Leicester did threaten to score a fourth and see out the victory. Once it got to penalties, City came up short, but Rodgers couldn't fault either the takers or goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who was making his 450th appearance for the Club.
"We expected that," the 48-old-year said of the Reds' resurgence. "You’re going to have to suffer in games like this here. We did that throughout the second half, while we really should have got a fourth goal whenever we broke through into the box, but it wasn’t to be.
"Kasper, you always fancy him to make a save, but it’s unfortunate. Luke [Thomas] obviously missed the penalty, but he was brilliant throughout the night. He’s a young player with a big future and it’s just a shame for him.""
