- LCFC Women beat Manchester City on penalties in the Continental Tyres League Cup- Janice Cayman and Sophie Howard scored the Foxes’ goals in a 2-2 draw- Leicester have five points from two games so far in Group B- It's a different approach from last season, says Aimee Palmer
LCFC Women remain unbeaten in the Continental Tyres League Cup campaign this year, after drawing 2-2 with Man City at Joie Stadium in midweek, before claiming an extra Group B point with a shootout victory. Explaining her thoughts on the game, midfielder Palmer referenced how the Foxes were ahead at the break - through goals from Sophie Howard and Janice Cayman - and were unable to hold onto their lead, though did perform to a high level. “When we look at the game overall, we’re pleased,” the former Bristol City player, who assisted Howard's goal, began. “But going 2-0 up is hard for us to go in again at 2-2 at the end of the game, and I think we did well to keep like that by the final whistle.
“But we’re pleased to get two points from the game, and we move onto the next one. We’ve analysed the first few games of the season, and realised we need to start quicker which we have done.
“Now it’s about making it a whole 90-minute performance. We’re getting the first 45 minutes right, but we need to keep it going for the whole game.”
There’s a significant improvement from last season, not just in terms of the general performance but all over the pitch. In front of goal, Leicester have scored in all but one of their fixtures this term.
Palmer explained how this Club philosophy is clear to see anytime they hit the pitch, and they want to keep this momentum and identity present, no matter the opponent.
“We’re different from last season,” she continued. “We want to show other teams what we’re about. We like having the ball, working with the ball, and keeping the ball, and we want to make chances, and play our game no matter who it’s against.
“We made a lot of chances in the first half, so we were happy to have the lead, but now it’s about keeping hold of it.
“We’ve been 2-0 up at half-time and come out 6-2. So, I think we've done well this game to improve on that, but we've got high expectations of ourselves. We've done well, but for us, we want to get all three points next time.
“It's not bad, but it's not perfect. We want to get as many points as we can, but we go into the next game and hopefully we can get out of the group, which is our aim.”
The 23-year-old was full of praise for the goalkeepers as well, with both playing a big part in the victory in Manchester which keeps them firmly in the running to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
“I think you can tell, by the end, that they really are a goalkeeper union,” Palmer explained. “Obviously Lize [Kop] is gutted to come off, but Jani (Janina Leitzig) has come on and done exceptionally well. “And I think you can tell that we're such a tight knit group from them both being as happy for each other, no matter the situation.”
