- LCFC Women beat Bristol City 5-2 in the Barclays Women’s Super League- There were five different goalscorers in the victory at King Power Stadium- Willie Kirk provided his take on a successful afternoon for the Foxes- City welcome Chelsea to Filbert Way after the international break
Leicester made it five wins from seven games last weekend as they beat Bristol City on Filbert Way, but the visitors made life difficult for them, scoring twice in the fixture. Following the win, Kirk spoke to the media and admitted that the opposition's goals gave his side a wake up call, before they displayed their professionalism to get the job done. “It looked like we were just trying to outscore the opposition today,” the Manager voiced. “That’s what happened because even though we had a lot of the ball, we knew Bristol’s threat on the counter attack.
“The first goal, we created that trouble ourselves, but the most pleasing thing was that we kept playing the way we were in the first 20 minutes, so we didn't let it dent our confidence and belief.
“You can reflect back, and knowing that we got the win, you can see that sometimes conceding is the best thing because it showed our ability to keep doing the right things and get it back again.”
Reflecting on the influence that Yuka Momiki and Saori Takarada have had on the team since their arrival in January, after both found the net against the Robins, the former Everton manager was not surprised by the quality of Momiki’s first goal for the Club. Kirk continued: “I don’t know if anyone saw my reaction to Yuka [Momiki’s] goal, but I wasn’t actually that surprised because she does that every day in training. Sometimes that’s the only way she can get through to goal and she’s a phenomenal talent.
“Saori [Takarada] did a serious job for the team today. She ran over 11km and she’s so important in the midfield role for us.
“The most important thing is that the goals are coming from all over the place, and the opponents don’t know where it’s coming from, and sometimes we don’t, which is a good thing.
“We’re not relying on a single player, and that is making us really dangerous, because the opposition will try to put out a number of fires, but there’s usually more coming from elsewhere.
“We kept saying that Bristol will not die unless you kill them off, because of the pace they have in the front areas, which is hard to deal with.
“It was uncomfortable for us at times, but we kept playing. There were sloppy moments, but we changed shape and got through those moments. The fourth goal was really important, and it wasn’t until that point that we could relax a bit.”
Academy forward Denny Draper had an instant impact on the game, getting on the end of two chances, taking one of them to net her first professional goal.
“It’s a name (Denny Draper) that will be more recognisable over the next few years,” Kirk stated. “She’s a fantastic talent, she’s getting more game time, and she had two chances and one goal.
“That sums her up as she’s a goalscorer and it’s a great sight to see her get her first senior goal. Overall, it was disappointing to concede two goals, but I’m pleased with the performance we put in.”
