Monday 9 March, 2020 was a significant date in the football calendar. It proved to be the final day that any fans in the UK attended a Premier League fixture until mid-June.
King Power Stadium was the venue as Leicester defeated Aston Villa and gave the fans plenty to shout about with a glittering display on Filbert Way. The 4-0 victory was, in many ways, a perfect send off. Not that we knew it then, but it would be a long wait for the next occasion with supporters in attendance. Football soon ground to a halt, as the country responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the Premier League resumed a little over three months later, things were very different.
Now cheering on from home, supporters continued to back the team, sitting in front of television screens, rather than being able to follow the Foxes up and down the country, but still enthusiastically sporting their side, some even decorating their houses in flags, banners and memorabilia.
Tuesday 23 June, 2020 and a Premier League encounter with Brighton & Hove Albion was the first time King Power Stadium had been empty for a competitive fixture – how it would remain for 32 subsequent matches over the next 11 months. Memorable victories, milestones and moments during that time have all missed the spine-tingling roar and appreciation of the crowd.
Jamie Vardy’s 100th Premier League goal against Crystal Palace on 4 July, City’s first venture into the UEFA Europa League and an FA Cup Quarter-Final triumph over Manchester United to name but a few. That incredible comeback victory over Premier League champions Liverpool in February, followed by the Club’s joint-biggest top flight home victory - a 5-0 success against Sheffield United - were unforgettable, but just not the same without a packed-out King Power Stadium. And now, it’s finally time for the Blue Army to return, albeit in a smaller capacity than normal. Up to 8,000 fans are set to descend on Filbert Way on Sunday afternoon, as the Foxes tackle Tottenham Hotspur, with all in attendance eager to get their first glimpse of a very familiar setting. For everyone, it will be a chance to cheer on and congratulate their Wembley heroes following last weekend’s maiden triumph. Maybe we'll be able to toast a different kind of achievement too.
