A 10-week mental wellbeing course that uses football resources to bringing different areas of mental health together is making positive strides towards improving people’s mental health.
Goal Difference is a health and wellbeing programme offering free weekly group interventions to help boost mental wellbeing.
Supported by NHS Charities Together, Leicester Hospitals Charity and Raising Health, it utilises the Benevolence; Connecting; Activity; Learning and Mindfulness (BCALM) to help adults reach their individually set goals.
A participant, who wishes not to be named, has attended all bar one session since Goal Difference Leicester began. They discussed their journey to improved mental wellbeing.
“I came out of the Covid pandemic in a bad place,” they started. “Everybody had been locked up for 18 months, nobody had been out and done anything. [I said] if we don’t get people out of the house we will have a massive problem.
“Leicester City in the Community took this on board and introduced me to Goal Difference over two years ago. The programme has since helped me look at things in different ways; I am a better person now – I am calmer and kinder – I think of other people more than I used to.”
The programme looks to try and encourage people to talk about mental health-related issues in a relaxed setting at King Power Stadium, without any pressure.
They look at a number of individual elements; general wellbeing, actions, what they are doing, learning, what to look at and mindfulness. Through this, Goal Difference coaches aim to build up mental health through resilience.
“The Goal Difference coaches have helped me turned negatives into positives, and look at life in different ways,” the unnamed participant added.
“I have met so many new people, so I am getting that friendship group back again. It has changed my life quite a lot.”
Goal Difference takes place every Tuesday from 10:30am to 12:30pm, for adults over 18 with an interest in improving their mental wellbeing.
