- LCFC Women face Manchester United on Thursday evening- The Continental Tyres League Cup fixture will be played at Leigh Sports Village- City's midweek acton is a chance to return to form, says Aileen Whelan- The Foxes have five points from their first two games in the competition
Two games remain in the League Cup group stage for Leicester, who already have five points in Group B of the competition after seeing off Liverpool, before picking up an extra point in a penalty shootout win against Manchester City.
Aileen Whelan previewed Thursday's clash with Man Utd, seeing the 1-1 draw in October as evidence that they are good enough to challenge the Red Devils, and hopes for an even better performance this time out.
"Going off the draw that we had with them earlier this season, we were disappointed to only get a draw, so we're going into it with fire in our belly and wanting to win like we always do," the captain told LCFC.com. "I think we've got every opportunity to progress to the knockout stages, and we'll setup to win the game.
"We've got to look at the fact we've put ourselves into a good position. That's got to be our mentality that we're in a good position and we've just got to keep pushing to get through the group stages."
Dropping points from winning positions has become a running theme for the Foxes in recent weeks. Scoring goals has not been an issue though, with summer signings Lena Petermann and Jutta Rantala finding the net in a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at Broadfield Stadium last time out.
Always wanting to improve, the 32-year-old spoke about the impact that the new recruits have had on the team and labelled the midweek fixture as a chance to keep destiny in their own hands, with a win placing Leicester in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
"We're disappointed with the draw at Brighton so we want to go and rectify that by getting back to winning ways with a good performance," the midfielder continued. "We know that they (Man Utd) have strengthened this summer, but so have we, so it's fair game until we get to the field and it comes down to whoever has the better performance on the day.
"I feel like there's numerous reasons as to why we haven't seen out recent games. Brighton were 2-0 down and then they looked a bit more hungry to get back into the game than we were to finish it off properly. I think lapses in concentration are a problem that we're working on, to make sure we're focused for 90 minutes.
"We need to make sure we're putting games to bed as early as possible because then teams don't have the chance to get back into it. A good result would only leave us with Everton to play so if we get three points against Man Utd, then we're not relying on other results. It will be based on us, which is what we want."
