- LCFC Women were handed a 4-0 defeat by Chelsea on Sunday evening- Leicester remain seventh in the Barclays Women’s Super League- We’ll be up there one day, says captain Aileen Whelan- The Foxes face Liverpool at Prenton Park on Saturday in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup
Leicester’s progress in the Barclays Women’s Super League was halted on Sunday evening following a 4-0 loss to Chelsea at King Power Stadium. Two goals before the half-time whistle sent the Blues on their way to three points but captain Whelan stated that there were good parts to take away from the performance. “We took the game to them in the first half and if we had put our chances away, we could’ve even gone into half-time with the lead,” the attacker commented. “Offensively [in the] first half we were good, but in the second half they were much better than us.
“I don’t think our in-possession work was quite where it needed to be, and the decision making wasn’t as good as it could’ve been and they capitalised and went on scoring.
“That’s why they’re top of the league and a top-table side, and that’s where we want to be so hopefully in a few years, that’ll be us.”
The former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder discussed Leicester City's development and how the team has come on leaps and bounds since their first two seasons in the top flight.
Currently sat seventh in the WSL, the Foxes are aiming for a positive second half of the season, which starts with an Adobe Women’s FA Cup Quarter-Final clash against Liverpool at Prenton Park.
“You only have to look back on last year, and see we’ve made huge improvements," Whelan continued. “There’s still lots of work to do, but the signings we’ve made is a sign of where we want to be.
“Just watch this space, and one day, we’ll be up there.”
