This season, the iconic tune, which dates back to 1928, will continue to be played before matches here at King Power Stadium – seconds before kick-off.
Its link to Leicester City is debated among the Blue Army. The most commonly accepted tale starts in the late 1970s, when the Foxes were managed by Jock Wallace. The Scotsman built a strong bond between the Club and its supporters and this manifested itself through a raucous home atmosphere at Filbert Street.
Legend states that, during late nights spent at the Three Cranes pub in Humberstone Gate, older patrons would sing When You’re Smiling to show their affection for Leicester City. Eventually, the younger pub-goers joined in, also taking the ditty with them as coach travel to away games also become more common place in the 1980s.
Before long, it became the ultimate Leicester City tune – whatever your age or background. Ever since, whether it be at home or away, on domestic turf or further afield, When You’re Smiling has followed the Foxes wherever they go.
