- Callum Wright has revealed his delight after joining Leicester City's Development Squad- The talented midfielder signed from Blackburn Rovers last Wednesday- He made his maiden appearance for the Under-23s at Chelsea in Premier League 2 on Friday night- Wright wants to impress the coaching team at Belvoir Drive as quickly as possible
The 17-year-old attacking midfielder was procured from the Lancashire outfit following an impressive debut campaign at Under-23s level at Ewood Park in Premier League 2 Division 2. Now a member of Leicester City’s Division 1 title-chasers, Wright is determined to make his mark at Belvoir Drive and aims to continue his meteoric rise through the youth ranks.
“I’m delighted, I’ve been looking forward to getting started and joining such a big club who are capable of achieving amazing things,” he said after the 1-0 reverse at Chelsea on Friday evening. “Hopefully I can create some great memories here. The facilities are great and the squad, as individuals and as a team, are quality. It’s a very tight group too.
“[The Under-23s are] going well in the league and it’s always great to join a team on the up. I see myself as an attacking player, I like taking people on one-on-one and I’ve scored goals doing that at Blackburn.
“I also like creating chances and assists for my team-mates so hopefully I can do that for my new team-mates. It’s an exciting time for the Under-23s side here so anything is possible.
“I wanted to come to a winning team and I’m looking forward to helping them achieve more success during the rest of the season.”
While his move to King Power Stadium represents a learning curve for the Liverpool-born midfielder, Wright says he is unfazed by the challenge of establishing a place in Steve Beaglehole's squad.
“It’s a good test for me to keep pushing on through the age groups,” he added. “Age doesn’t mean much to me, it’s all about ability, development and mindset.
“I’m playing with these lads and they’re all quality and I’ll put myself on a par with them so hopefully we can all do our bit to try and get into the first team one day... that’s the aim.”
After appearing in the competition for Blackburn this season, Wright will be cup-tied for the Premier League Cup visit to Portsmouth on Tuesday night (7pm kick-off).
