Leicester City Under-18s goalkeeper Cameron Yates says his team-mates should be proud of their efforts following the in their FA Youth Cup Quarter-Final on Wednesday night.
With the Blue Army behind them at King Power Stadium, the young Foxes were defensively solid throughout and executed their game plan to the letter but Ike Ugbo’s solitary goal in the second half was enough for the visitors to emerge from the East Midlands with the victory.
Young 'keeper Yates, ever-present for the Under-18s and a part of the squad who travelled to Germany for the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup last month, insists the players can take great satisfaction from their performance, if not the result, against the seven-time winners of the competition.
Reflecting on the defeat pitchside with LCFC TV at full-time, Yates said: “It’s a tough one to take. We’re very disappointed but it’s a mix of disappointment and pride because they’re a very talented group and we gave 100 per cent – that’s all you can do.
“They put a bit of pressure on us early on but we soaked it and looked to hit them on the counter-attack. In the first ten minutes of the second half we did really well, put them under pressure, and hit the post.
“But things didn’t fall our way tonight and that’s football. There is a massive amount of pride from the lads, everyone worked hard and if Kairo’s [Arlott-Edwards] shot hadn’t hit the post we could be standing here with a win tonight.
“We stayed compact and kept almost everything out to be fair apart from a good header. They took their chances and we couldn’t quite take ours.”
