Leicester City saw off Charlton Athletic 1-0 on Saturday
It was our maiden Sky Bet Championship success this term
Abdul Fatawu scored the winner at The Valley
He felt it was a real team performance to come away with the points
The Ghanaian also appreciated the love from the Blue Army
The Foxes secured a first away success of the 25/26 Sky Bet Championship campaign at The Valley, courtesy of Fatawu’s screamer, celebrating in front of the 3,139 City fans who made the journey down to the capital at the weekend. The winger felt the support from the away stand throughout the encounter, especially when City faced a period of pressure, with Nathan Jones’ side pushing hard for an equaliser.
“I think this is a game for the fans because it was a great atmosphere as well and they were giving us more energy,” the Ghana international told us post-match. “We are just happy to have the three points away from home.
“It was amazing because the opponent was good at set pieces and how we dealt with it was amazing. It was good seeing the fans give us the energy and everyone in the team were putting it in to defend. That gave us the three points. We’re happy and we enjoyed it.
“I just want to say I really enjoyed the atmosphere from the fans and we want to see more and we will give more energy every time we are on the field. Now we’ll keep going again as the season keeps going.”
The goal itself, scored three minutes after half-time, saw Fatawu make a trademark move inside from the right before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed strike into the top corner. His first since returning from the ACL injury which kept him out of action for the majority of last season, it made all the difficult times worth it.
The 21-year-old continued: “It was a tough moment and I just had to take my decision because we needed a goal to come out on top of the game. What I did, it fortunately went in and that gave us the three points.
“This was the moment I have been waiting for and it was a good time to take it. I’m so happy with the team and everyone supporting with my rehab. It’s just good to have a moment like this to feel happy with the fans and everyone in the team. We just keep going.
“It’s all about the team and even the people who came off the bench and giving out the love we got from the fans. That makes things easy for the team. It was great we got the points. It was a great one and a good one for me. I think there’s more to do for the team and we just keep focused for next weekend.”
