The former Portsmouth, Stoke City, Chelsea, AFC Bournemouth, Everton and Queens Park Rangers shot-stopper has joined Leicester City on a one-year deal, linking up again with Manager Martí Cifuentes as we embark on this Sky Bet Championship campaign.
With nearly 450 appearances at the top level to his name, the 38-year-old former Bosnia and Herzegovina international joins a talented goalkeeping group – and he’s confident he can help his team-mates thrive while also contributing on the pitch himself.
“I feel really excited,” Begovic told us on Tuesday. “It’s obviously a pleasure to be here, a big honour to join such a great club. I can’t wait to get going. Hopefully I can bring some leadership, some experience. I think, with the years I’ve been in the game, hopefully I can bring those two factors to the squad as well as quality.
“Ultimately [I’ll contribute] whatever the squad needs, whatever the Manager needs. This Club deserves all the success they can get and want. For me, it’s about contributing in any way I can, and I’m looking forward to doing that.
“I’m very excited [to start]. It’s not every day a club of this stature gets in touch about coming here and joining the Club. Hopefully we have an exciting season where we can challenge at the top of the table and push for promotion and get the Club to where it belongs. With the group of players, the staff, and everything here, the set-up, everything’s ready to go for us to be successful.”
Asmir is excited to get started and link up against with Manager Martí Cifuentes.
Having played under Cifuentes at QPR, Begovic knows all about the new Foxes Manager’s methods – and is eager to see him implement his beliefs at Leicester City – especially considering the quality of player at the Spaniard’s disposal.
“I had a chat with him, which was good,” the goalkeeper added. “Obviously that helps, having a familiarity with him and how he works. It makes it easier to settle in. I’m looking forward to [working with] him.
“We had a great time at QPR, we had a really good run with the team there. It’s very exciting. I think his record with what he’s been able to do with QPR, in probably some difficult circumstances for him, should give a lot of excitement to the fans.
“Now being able to come here, with such a great squad and really top-quality players, I think he’s ready and wants to take that next step. He’s excited and we’re all excited for the season ahead with everything that’s in front of us.
“If we all get on the same page, push together in the right direction, then I think we can have a really good season. He does [have experience of the Championship]. Almost having two seasons now in the Championship, in English football, is really, really helpful. It’s never easy when you come from other countries to settle in and get a grip of the English game.
“He was able to do that pretty quickly. He has some clear ideas in terms of how he wants to work. He’s really, really organised, and I think the players are going to take really well to him.
“I know they’ve had a good trip in Austria so far and we’re looking forward to the rest of pre-season and getting started against Sheffield Wednesday and really making sure we start off on the right foot.”
Working with the group of shot-stoppers already at the Club is also a source of excitement for Begovic, who has looked on from afar with admiration. Also knowing many of the players in the squad, he’s eager to get down to work in Seagrave.
He explained: “I know the goalkeeping group really well, obviously Mads [Hermansen] and Jakub [Stolarczyk] especially, and then there’s Stevie [Bausor] and the young boys.
The goalkeeper adds experience and knowhow to our ranks.
“I’m really looking forward to working with them and providing experience and leadership there, and any wisdom I may have, if they want to pick my brains for anything, and making sure we push each other, set standards every single day.
“We want to get better every day and I think those guys are super, super talented. They’re really young, of course, in their careers but they’ve got a big, big future in the game. If I can help them in any way, I’m looking forward to doing so.
“If you look at the playing staff, I think the quality speaks for itself. I’ve played against many of these players for many years, a couple are really good friends – the likes of Conor Coady, who was my team-mate at Everton – and other lads who I know just through playing with them, being in England for such a long time.
“I’m just excited to be a part of the group, add whatever I can, and make sure we do the business on the pitch and get the results we need.
“What I’ve realised over many years, for a team to be successful, you have to leave your personal agendas aside. It’s about whatever the Manager decides and, whatever position you’re in, it’s about being a star in that role and doing that role to the best of your ability.
“For me, it’s about doing whatever’s asked of me and I think if we have that togetherness, that good culture and team spirit, we can achieve a lot of good things. For me, it’s about doing whatever’s necessary and helping in any way I can.”
