Leicester City defender Ben Nelson looks ahead to Sunday's friendly vs. Fiorentina
The Academy graduate is excited to get started as a busy pre-season begins to reach its climax
He also elaborates on the gains made during the camp in Austria, both on and off the training pitches
Sunday sees Italian outfit ACF Fiorentina visit King Power Stadium for our final friendly of the summer, before Sheffield Wednesday come to town on the opening weekend of the Sky Bet Championship season seven days later.
It’s an exciting time for the players, who have put the work in, and now they can begin to look forward to implementing new Manager Martí Cifuentes’ methods in a competitive environment.
Reflecting on the nine-day camp in Austria, Nelson said: “It was very good, time to get away and bond with the team-mates. The three games gave the whole squad a good opportunity to get good minutes in the legs.
“The time you get to spend with everyone helps straight away. They were tough [sessions], very tactical, and not too much running – which was nice! It was more in possession and working in that way.”
Having played in both of last Friday’s friendlies – firstly against Karpaty Lviv and then FC Köln – the Academy graduate added: “Coming on in both games and getting a good chunk of minutes, 30 in both, so it was a good challenge to stay on it after the first game especially and travel to the next game. It’s all part of the development.”
Spending time away with team-mates and the new Manager has been useful for Nelson, who says he's relished the opportunity to get to grips with the focus and approach to 25/26.
“We’ve got up close and personal and you’ve got to gel quickly,” he explained. “You get more time together and you can just see how much he loves the game and the passion he brings towards the game and what he wants in his philosophy.
“The gaffer gives that confidence and it shows you what he wants so easily from day one. You’ve got to be confident in yourself to go out there and perform.
“We’re building up to the main stage now and the big game at King Power Stadium, the first game of the season. We’ve got a good run out this weekend as well against a really top opposition so that will be a good test before we go into that first game.
“I can’t wait to perform and see all the fans inside King Power Stadium and the away games as well. It’s going to be great.”
