Jordan Ayew’s 17th-minute penalty and a composed finish from Bobby De Cordova-Reid, in the 45th minute, had Leicester City in a commanding position at the break, but the Robins were back in the contest almost immediately after the restart.
Mark Sykes got one back for the home side a minute into the second half before Emil Riis' equaliser with seven to play in the South West. Jakub Stolarczyk had to make some key saves for the Foxes, who had gone from chasing a win to protecting a point, while substitute Silko Thomas had a chance at the death for the visitors.
This draw leaves City 13th in the Sky Bet Championship, on 28 points, three outside the top six, with Ipswich Town due at King Power Stadium on Saturday (3pm GMT kick-off).
Early promise
Riding the wave of optimism fuelled by a 3-1 win at Derby County, we started brightly again in Bristol, commuting the ball around at pace, probing the Robins backline.
It came after a scare, with Stolarczyk smothering Riis' close-range strike, but the Foxes’ first-half pressure began in earnest. Stephy Mavididi’s header glanced the crossbar, after Hamza Choudhury’s deep cross from the right channel.
Ben Nelson’s header was straight at home goalkeeper Radek Vítek, but when Scott Twine stuck out a leg at Mavididi’s heels 16 minutes in, the referee didn’t hesitate in reaching for his whistle. Ayew was the man to step up, confidently stroking his foot through the ball, almost chipping it down the middle, as Vítek dived to his left.
Bobby scores again
Mavididi was a problem for the Robins’ backline, chiefly Ross McCrorie over on his side of the pitch. The City No.10 caused issues again shortly afterwards, but Vítek was up to the challenge to halt his drive from the edge of the box.
Down the other end, Cameron Pring’s header had alarm bells ringing for Stolarczyk, but the Polish shot-stopper was able to watch it fly just over his bar.
Our second of the night came from a former Bristol City man, De Cordova-Reid, after some superlative wing play from Abdul Fatawu, taking Anis Mehmeti and Zak Vyner of the equation with a stylish shimmy on the right wing. And De Cordova-Reid was composed to sweep it home for his second goal in as many games for the Foxes.
Robins fight back
Leicester knew they had to keep Bristol City quiet after the break, but the hosts came out intent on shifting the momentum. Within 50 seconds, Mehmeti’s cross presented an opportunity, forcing Jannik Vestergaard to stretch his 6ft 6in frame to prevent it skidding across goal.
Sykes reacted quickest to the loose ball, squeezing it in at the near post to give Gerhard Struber’s side hope. Leicester then rode their luck just after the hour when Mehmeti’s corner was nodded on by Rob Dickie and glanced by substitute Sinclair Armstrong onto the bar before it deflected off Neto Borges and behind.
Adam Randell later lashed wide, and with eight minutes left McCrorie’s pinpoint cross found Riis, the Dane powering a header into the bottom corner. Stolarczyk was needed late on to deny Randell and Dickie but, although Bristol City had the momentum, Silko Thomas also went close for City at the death. His curler forced a smart save from Vítek, as it finished 2-2.
