Only our third competitive meeting with the Robins – and a first since 2009 – ended in victory for Leicester City, courtesy of first-half goals from Patson Daka and Stephy Mavididi. Daka’s was a stylish curled effort 23 minutes in at The EV Charger Points Stadium, while Mavididi burst forwards to double our lead on the stroke of half-time.
Following Monday’s success over West Bromwich Albion in the Sky Bet Championship, it’s now back-to-back wins for the Foxes, who will discover the next step of our FA Cup journey during Monday night's fourth-round draw, before heading to Coventry City in the league on Saturday.
Daka on target
Former Foxes Assistant Manager Steve Cotterill’s Cheltenham, 18th in the fourth tier, started brightly in Gloucestershire, with ice still on the pitch where the sun couldn’t reach.
Luke Young sailed a promising free-kick wide 14 minutes into the contest, while Robbie Cundy also nodded over from close range. City were yet to carve out a true goalscoring opportunity, although Silko Thomas – one of six Academy graduates in the starting XI – did have the ball in the net, but it wouldn’t stand due to an earlier foul.
Daka, back from the Africa Cup of Nations, did put Leicester in front in the 23rd minute. Teed up by Mavididi, the Zambian curled it superbly into the far bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area, just slightly off centre to the left.
Mavididi adds another
Oliver Skipp was unlucky not to get in on the act just before the half-hour when he hooked a loose ball over the bar from Ben Nelson’s header in the box.
An agile stop from Joe Day is all that prevented Jannik Vestergaard too, tipping his powerful header onto the crossbar, the Dane going for goal from six yards out, getting on the end of Louis Page’s dangerous corner.
Cheltenham, mind you, could and perhaps should have levelled matters when Jake Bickerstaff played Jordan Thomas in, galloped through down the left. Asmir Begovic, one of eight new faces in the line-up, got down well however to parry a fierce drive.
Seeing out the win
Jordan Thomas was a menace again into the second half, twisting and turning as he advanced down the left channel. He tried to catch Begovic out as well, chipping it over the Bosnia & Herzegovina goalkeeper, but our No.31 was able to get back to divert it over.
Mavididi went close again later on, while Martí Cifuentes looked to his bench to inject new energy onto the pitch. The job was done, though, with the Foxes now looking ahead to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
After Monday’s draw, ties for that stage are scheduled to be played over the weekend of 14 February, in between trips to Birmingham City and Stoke City.
