There are several items in the Club’s heritage collection relating to the 2000 League Cup Final when, in the last season at the old Wembley Stadium, Martin O’Neill’s City lifted the trophy for the third time, having already done so in 1964 and 1997.
These two shirts from the 2000 Final are two such items. The first is Matt Elliott’s jersey, City’s victorious captain, who scored twice in the 2-1 victory over Tranmere Rovers. It is a Fox Leisure shirt, with the words ‘The Worthington Cup Final Wembley 2000’ embroidered beneath the pre-2009 version of the Club’s crest. The reverse side of the shirt sports Matt’s autograph.
Matt remembers the day clearly as he explained to us earlier this season: “The final against Tranmere Rovers was a dream day for me. Especially after the previous year’s League Cup final against Spurs when we messed things up.
"We had felt we were better than Spurs even though they had big names like [David] Ginola, [Les] Ferdinand, [Sol] Campbell and [Ian] Walker. That Spurs defeat made us doubly determined to win the final against Tranmere. As a kid, you fantasise about scoring in a Cup Final at Wembley and I scored two, from two great deliveries from Steve Guppy.
"I was partly at fault for their goal, so I was glad to be able to make amends. I ended up as Man of the Match and was the first Leicester captain to lift a major Cup at Wembley. On top of that, my son was born two days later.”
The second shirt belonged to Tranmere midfielder, Alan Morgan, a Wales Under-21s midfielder who was an unused substitute in the final. In 2000, Rovers were an established second tier side who had reached the Play-Off Semi-Finals for a place in the Premier League in 1993, 1994 (when they were defeated by City), and 1995.
They had also reached the League Cup Semi-Final in 1994. Their manager was John Aldridge, the ex-Republic of Ireland, Newport County, Oxford United, Liverpool, Real Sociedad and Tranmere striker who scored 329 league goals during his career.
His assistant was Kevin Sheedy, another Republic of Ireland international, who won two league titles, the European Cup Winners’ Cup and four Community Shields while playing for Everton in the 1980s. Incidentally, Iain Hume, who later played 132 games for Leicester between 2005 and 2008, was also on the Tranmere books in 2000, although he took no part in the 2000 Final as he only established himself in the Rovers first team in 2002.
