Leicester City in the Community runs their Football Welcomes programme year-round, but the month of April is dedicated to celebrating it.
Leicester City in the Community’s Football Welcomes programme is an Amnesty UK backed initiative that provides free-to-access weekly sessions throughout Leicester and Leicestershire.
In the Football Welcomes programme, football is used as a tool to welcome participants who have come to Leicester and Leicestershire as refugees or people seeking safety, connecting them into a community, boosting their health and wellbeing and reducing social isolation.
Throughout April, Leicester City in the Community has taken this provision further, to raise the profile of the programme and the Football Welcomes Refugees campaign.
At the beginning of the month, Football Welcomes Coordinator Joe, Casual staff member Sabir, and participant Mo sat down with LCFC’s Jordan Ayew to discuss the need for the project, and the role football continues to play in welcoming refugees to the UK. Watch their full discussion.
A week later, a few hours before Leicester played Newcastle United on Monday 7 April, Leicester City in the Community’s Football Welcomes participants played Newcastle United Foundation’s Football Welcomes participants in Aylestone. The teams then shared a meal before heading to King Power Stadium to watch the match.
On Sunday 13 April, the annual Football Welcomes Tournament took place at Loughborough University, with teams travelling from across the Midlands to take part. In attendance were teams from Coventry, Derby and Loughborough, where a team from Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity were crowned this year’s champions.
Elsewhere in April, LCitC’s weekly sessions at St Margaret’s Pastures in Leicester continued, in partnership with After 18 and Loughborough University with LSU and Town of Sanctuary. City of Sanctuary, British Red Cross and Fearon Hall also continue to support the programme, as well as Islamic Relief UK.
