Leicester City defeated Bristol City 2-0 on Tuesday night
Ben Nelson and Abdul Fatawu scored our goals at King Power Stadium
It was an important three points, says Manager Gary Rowett
The Foxes moved out of the Sky Bet Championship relegation zone
Ben Nelson and Abdul Fatawu netted first-half goals on Filbert Way which ultimately led to securing three Sky Bet Championship points at a crucial point of the season, though a Jakub Stolarczyk penalty save was also required to preserve the win and clean sheet.
Speaking following full-time at King Power Stadium, Rowett reflected on a job well done, as the Foxes climbed out of the relegation zone, albeit having played a game more than the teams below, with confidence and belief to take into Saturday’s bout with Queens Park Rangers – also on home soil.
“I thought the team were good in spells,” he analysed post-match. “We managed the game well and did well to get ahead. We showed a little bit of nervousness having not won for a while but certainly we ticked a few boxes - first clean sheet, first win, made the three away draws look a little bit better.
“Of course, a win gives you confidence, a clean sheet gives you confidence. It shows you the path forward of what you need to do and the decisions you need to make in a game. Our shape was very good. If we do that and create chances, I’m pretty confident that we’ll score goals.
“It’s one game. We’ve worked hard in the other games but it’s one win. A really good team puts its foot on the gas again and shows a good mentality on Saturday, we’ll go and see if we can do that.”
With the backing of the Blue Army, it was a performance the supporters could be proud of, he felt, pleased to be able to oversee a much-improved display on Filbert Way, tasting victory for the first time since 5 January.
“[It feels] really nice,” he continued. “I thought it was nice to hear the crowd really getting behind the team and enjoying the performance. It’s been a while since they felt that way so it’s nice for them as well.
“I’m pleased the fans have gone home happy because it’s been a tough ride at times this season. If the fans get behind the team, look at the difference it makes, look at the atmosphere around, how positive it is.
“We’ve got to give them the performance. I think we did tonight. It’s nice to feel the stadium bouncing again. I want to see a little bit more of that.”
Conceding the spot-kick was perhaps the only point which worried the former Oxford United manager, though the Foxes looked defensively solid throughout, despite recent struggles of keeping the ball out of our net.
“There was a moment for the penalty,” the 52-year-old explained. “I thought Ben was really unlucky actually. [Emil] Riis Jakobsen is very clever and just gets his foot across Ben. I think Ben is unfortunate in that moment.
“They haven’t created too many clear-cut chances. They’ve got around the edge of our box a few times, but I can’t remember too many chances that they created.
“To be in that position where it could be 2-1 and of course I think everyone would have felt a bit edgy and nervous. A big save from Jak and the lads gave him a little note with which way they thought Jakobsen was going to go, so it was brilliant team work from everyone. Then we managed the game really well after that. It gave us a little lift and the subs gave us a lift.
“We had a plan for the first 60 today and a plan for the last 30. We’ve struggled to manage the last 30 minutes of games. I think the bench, and starting the way we did, knowing that then left us with some real strength to bring on, was really important for us.
“The changes changed the game and the energy. Now we’re getting a few back, it’s unfortunate for some of the young players, but I think at this stage of the season, we need a little bit of experience and know-how and the bench showed that today.”
Two goals of real quality set the tone for the evening, with Jordan James’ free-kick perfect for Nelson to head home, before Fatawu slammed in the second from a tight angle.
“It’s a great delivery,” Rowett added on the first. “It’s a real nice outswinger and Ben should do that more often. He looked dominant, I thought it was a dominant performance from him tonight and Caleb [Okoli]. I thought they were excellent.
“He should go and get on the end of things more often, so it’s nice to see him score. He’s got a good feeling for those moments.
“The second one, I think we made 18 passes for the build up. It was good, composed play. Abdul ends up with a volley with his right foot. It’s a thunderbolt, getting in the right position at the back post.
“There were some really good moments where we played with a bit of composure late on in the game. We get Abdul and Stephy [Mavididi] away. On other day, maybe we make it three or four but there’s a lot of things to like today.”
