Leicester City beaten on penalties by Huddersfield Town after 2-2 draw in Carabao Cup
Hamza Choudhury scored the opener and captained the Foxes at Accu Stadium
The first-round defeat was all our own doing, said the midfielder, speaking post-match
The midfielder, captain on the night, scored a stunner to open his account at Accu Stadium, and Harry Winks also found the net, but twice the Terriers came from behind to level, firstly through Dan Vost and then Cameron Ashia, sending the game to spot-kicks.
After a winning start in the league at the weekend, beating Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship, the performance produced in west Yorkshire was not up to the standard required, particularly in the first half, allowing our third-tier opponents the opportunity to claim victory. “Before the game the gaffer put importance on us wanting to win every game, be in every competition and we wanted a long cup run,” the 27-year-old outlined, giving an honest assessment at full-time.
“We let it get to penalties and weren’t good enough on the day. When it goes to penalties, it’s a lottery on the day as we know and unfortunately, we came down on the losing side. We were sloppy at times. We didn’t put out a performance that we know we can.
“We were good in pre-season and the lads obviously got an important win on Saturday, so we were looking to build on that. Obviously, we made a few changes but all of those lads have been playing in pre-season and we know what the gaffer wants from us.
“We weren’t quite up to speed in the first half but in the second we were better in periods. We go 1-0 up and then I give a penalty away. We went 2-1 up and should really close the game out from there. We let them get back into the game and it’s disappointing.
“If we had won 2-1 we go away and still know we’ve got lots of work to do but a win’s a win. To lose when it’s purely our fault is frustrating.”
Although ending in defeat, skippering the side was an honour for the Bangladesh international, who was one of seven Academy graduates to start the game, before an eighth, Louis Page, was introduced for his first-ever competitive senior appearance.
“It’s always a proud moment playing for Leicester,” Choudhury expressed. “I love playing for the Club and it’s a massive honour to captain them.
“It’s credit to the Club. Over the last few years we’ve had loads of lads come in, like Luke [Thomas] and Kasey [McAteer], Wanya [Marçal], Will [Alves], Ben [Nelson], me and Louis [Page] and Jeremy [Monga] are coming through.
“It’s a long list and it's the young coaches who helped progress these players. It’s a bright future because the lads are really talented and it’s good to have.”
